Default Anyone Using Run Flats?

I've followed the various threads Pirelli versus Michelin. Never have seen any discussion about the pro's and cons of run flat tires on our F-Types. Anyone using them? Are they even made in sizes for our rims?

Run flat tires, unless the type that is put on armored vehicles and requires special wheel setup, are failed technology. They don't really run when flat, they are harsher than normal tires, and they cost more.

Avoid them.

^^^^exactly....super hard sidewalls or an inner rim insert, not really a "performance" tire.

My understanding is that there are no run-flats that meet the performance requirements of the F. Could you put on a lesser tyre? I suppose so. It would be nice if there were an alternative, any alternative, to the compressor and can of goo.

I had huge Michelin runflats on a 2007 Z06 I owned. Can't believe the Jag performance spec is any more demanding than that.

It will be interesting to learn if there is a run-flat that will work on the F. I was told by Jaguar dealers (2) and a MB dealer relative to an AMG model that there was no adequately rated run flat performance tires made. Now, I had a friend throw away the run-flats he had on a Lexus because they were so squirrelly in the cold. How did the ones on your Corvette work out. Handling ok? Ride ok? The F has a pretty stiff ride even with normal side wall tires.

Worst yet, they weigh 50% more than a similarly sized UHP tire. Not even a consideration.

Run Flat Tire really sucks. Personally I do own a tire-shop selling Continental tires. Never recommend any type of car owners to install RFT unless he or she insist !

I never tracked the Corvette when I owned it. Having said that, I had no issues with the run flats for normal spirited street driving. The reason why I brought up the topic is that I like to road trip with the Jag as I know many of you do as well. The longest ride I've taken so far is about 800 miles. Just like to have a little back up that's better that a can of flat fix when I go on a road trip.

I carry a CO2 bottle and a flat kit as well as the fix a flat in all my vehicles. Hope I never need them.

+1
Run flats are so hard they bend rims and belch air regularly. Terrible choice unless its a slow speed car or minivan.

I had them on two difference Lexus cars. Couldn't wait to get rid of them. They wore out fast, they were unbelievably loud and the ride quality and handling were terrible. They were also more expensive to replace than Michelin Pilot Sports I replaced them with.

Run-flats tram-line allot and have poor performance. I had them on my 2005 Z4 coupe when stock. After changing to non-run-flats, it made a huge difference in performance on and off the track.

I had run flats on my 2008 Audi TT, wear on the tires was about 30%, picked up a nail. You can't patch a run-flat and in a AWD car you can't just replace one tire. Run flat tires aren't cheap. That damn nail cost me something like $3,200. Never again... (Tires weren't that great either). Sadly the tires were the only thing I didn't like about that car (no that's now true, I had the 6 and wanted more power...).

Go on a road trip with run flats and have a problem with one in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night and see how you like run flats. Fat 20 performance tires are hard enough to find under those circumstances (unless you have a Jag GM with you with a spare f-type and speed dial to a 24/7 tow company!).

I agree with the points regarding hard sidewall and high ish cost. They're only intended for driving up to 100 miles at 50 mph maximum when flat, just to get to garage.

Regarding your comment that they're not for performance cars, both Bridgestone and Dunlop Sport Max run flats have been fitted to GT-R as oem fitment for years.
