Default Confused on Start/Stop button replacement

Hello Everyone - Well, I thought I’d spend money on a change I didn’t need – have always liked the Ignis Orange start/stop button more than the black one in my 2018 FT. Thought it would make a good Christmas present. Well, after reading some threads such as:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/f...uttons-246876/

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/f...uttons-246876/

and checking several web pages, including Harper’s Jag (pic below) which said this part would fit, I ordered one – only to discover what you see in the second picture; plug from dash harness on left, old switch in the middle and the Ignis Orange switch on the right. No fit.

What am I missing here? Why does T2R42910 (orange) come up as a fit as well as T2R19038 (black) if that’s not true?

I thought I’d ask the forum before circling back to Harper’s customer service. Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays to all.

Default mistake averted!

Thank you for posting this! I had the identical switch (car is MY2017), and from Harper on my wish list. Will watch to see how it works out for you.

Something is definitely amiss but I don't know where the problem lies. I can say that my 2016 looks like the one on the right, four pins in an L-shaped receptacle. The part number in black in T2R42909. I've got my original right in front of me in the box the replacement came in. I replaced it because it stuck a few times but kept the original to clean up as a spare.

When it comes to our beloved Jaguars, some things never change... when you run out of the standard part on the assembly line, stuff something that's available in there. So far I haven't found anything odd on the MY2017 F, but on the 69 E, different story.

But not by fitting a part that can't be plugged into the wiring loom!

[QUOTE=, but on the 69 E, different story.[/QUOTE]

not so hard when it's only bullet or spade connectors.

A friend in UK used to make wiring harnesses for JLR in his mini workshop in the 80's.
Women wound multi colored wires around pins on wooden boards, then tied them together into looms.
Probably some of those still in use somewhere!!

ozXFR had posted this in another Start / Stop switch thread:

1. There are two styles of electrical plug connector on the back of the button, seemingly changed around MY 2016. Unfortunately the ads don't provide any details about which style of connector they are selling so it's pot luck. I was fortunate to get the right one first time, an Ignis (orange) button from a seller in Lithuania. Mine is a MY 2015 so odds on you want the same as I got.

I am under the impression that OP has fallen into this situation ......

Happy holidays, Valerie! It could be worse - you could have a S1.5 with stuff from both S1's and S2's. (But we're both used to needing the car's S/N for a match)

I'll reach out to Harper's Jag for their advice and keep the forum posted. Happy Holidays!

FYI update - below is the exchange I had with Harper. If anyone here on the forum has any details on this apparent harness change (and thus changed the rear connector on the switch) - and why, I'd appreciate it. Specifically wondering if there might be orange switches with the needed connector actually out there in the wild somewhere. First world issue I know, so definitely no big loss to stick with the current black switch. But it was supposed to be a Christmas splurge.

*********************************
ME:
As you can see in the attached pics, although your website indicated I selected the correct part/color, it does not fit because of the connector type in the rear. Your email asking about the VIN (in my hindsight) must have been asking me a question about the connector type, while I was focused on the color.

HARPER:
looks like according to your vin the one you needed was T2R19038 which is the black button i know you want the bronze one the only problem is they don't show me the connectors and there are multiple ones that say bronze button on the picture's so i can not match a connector i just know its spoused to have the black one I'm assuming the harness in the car is deferent between the ones that have the orange button and the black button

ME:
is there any explanation for why your web page says it’s a fit? It seems that there must have been a harness change that is somehow VIN dependent. How did you know to ask? Is there a document or text somewhere that alludes to the harness change by asking for a VIN in regards to this part instead of just the model year? I’d sure like to understand that so I can share the knowledge.

HARPER:
So the web page is not 100% correct sometimes that is why if we dont have the vin we always will request it so we can verify with the official jaguar parts catalogue and make sure its the correct part. Because certain models of that car of that year may use that button thats why it says it fits that year but with your vin it says it dont fit because that is not the one they put in at the factory so i guess they use for say a different harness beacuse its probable that it has other features and other special things thats why it wouldnt work on your car. there is no document just thats what i would assume since the plug is different because the start stop button is gonna plug into the main harness since it sends power to everything to turn on

As an aside, the Jag parts catalog isn’t 100% accurate, as anyone who had the dealer replace TPMS sensors on a MY14 knows.

I have my original stop/start button (Ignis orange) in my hot little hand as I type, and it is the same as the one on the right in the original post, same white (not black) plastic.
Similar but different numbers on the back, mine is:
X53-14C376-BA
18/08/14
08:55:13
It seems the date is in English format - day/month/year - and is the date the button was manufactured.
It also seems that the Ignis button always has the white L-shaped casing with the four pins while the black button always has the square casing with the five pins.
Seems to me the best method when ordering/buying a new button is to:
1. Pull your existing/old button out and check the plug shape on the back
2. Tell the seller/supplier which shape you have and ask them to check the shape of the potential sale button before you commit.

I can say with certainty that there *is* a black button with the L-shaped receptacle, T2R42909, so people wanting a new button should definitely check and have the dealer confirm a match. My local dealer ordered mine from my VIN. Ignis looks cool but I'd heard that the finish didn't last so didn't even try that option.

OzXFR - yep, that's the best approach. I would have done that but I had no idea, even after digging, that the plugs were different. Live and learn; maybe this thread will help someone.
