I'll have to try the holding the right shifter as suggested above.

Mine is set to be able to use the paddles in either D or S. If I'm in D and I've used the paddles for a bit then I want to go back to auto I've either waited for what seems like an age, or I've moved to S then back to D, as soon as it enters D it is now auto again. (P450 MY 21)

That's the proper way to do it! In the handbook under "Transmission", hold the right paddle for 1 second.
