Default F-Type Keys

My beautiful red 2016 F-Type convertible only came with one key. That is a worry. I read that I need a new KVM (Keyless vehicle Module). I believe it will come with two new keys.

I also have heard that a fob programmer can re-program it. However, I have been told that it is a bit risky, and it might cause other issues. One being that I won't be able to have the function where you can place the key fob under the dash to start if the key malfunctions.

Can anyone expand on that for me?

Cheers

Last week I have made an extra key fob for MY2014, which also came with just 1 fob. It also came with no hard key. That didn’t feel comfortable.

It was done by a shop which offers this service every day. It has cost me €200 total for the extra fob. I ordered a hard key at the Jaguar Dealer, which was about €100.

regards,

Adam

Thank you Adam. Could you confirm how they did it. Did they re-program the KVM?

I think I know what happened. Your 2014 was prior to Jaguar encrypting the KVM. I gather it was about 2015 or 2016 that they did it to stop cars being scanned and stolen. Hence you were able to have another key made. That is what my guy tried and failed of course. With my model I have to re-program it and make two new keys.

But thanks anyway,
Trevor

As for using a fob programmer, while it might seem like a quick fix, there are risks involved. Reprogramming can sometimes lead to compatibility issues or even prevent certain features from working, like the keyless start function you mentioned. If the key malfunctions, you could find yourself in a bind if that feature is disabled.

Yes, I have heard that. I have a guy coming to remove the KVM sometime to reprograming it, and supply two new genuine keys. If the KVM is just responsible for key management, I can't see how would it effect other functions. But it is a computer!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will talk to the guy about it and what guarantee's will I have.

Thanks for your comments,
TrevorD

It’s important to weigh the benefits against the possible drawbacks. If you decide to go this route, make sure to do thorough research and consider consulting a professional to avoid complications. Sometimes, sticking with the manufacturer’s recommendations can save you a lot of headaches down the line!

Thank you liamdcrip. Good advice. However, I am not using a fob programmer. My guy will remove the KVM and re-program it and supply me with two genuine Jaguar keys. Is that different to what you are talking about. Do you think that would be ok?

He will charge me NZ1,100 for this. Should I talk to about some assurance that everything will work?

Cheers
