F-Type ( X152 ) 2014 - Onwards

Was the F type sound 'neutered' for '19/'20?

Does this sound like a tune? Cause this is perfect. The one I drove today didn't do any of this.
I got that info from post # 13 where he says, quote: (VAP stg1).
Also the SVR has a different exhaust system to the R with a unique sound.
A few have asked if they can upgrade their R exhaust system to the SVR system but I don't know of anyone who has done so.
The SVR exhaust system is not just different it is very different, with different materials (Inconel and titanium) and a pair of north/south rear mufflers, and those parts are hellish expensive and to my knowledge would not bolt up to an R without some structural mods.

I know it's different but that doesn't explain the lack of crackling. The straight pipes has a review on YouTube that shows a 2018 with plenty. That was after any software updates that people talk about.

Yup and it still didn't work. I would run up to 4k-5k and let off and nothing. I did the same in a '14 and it crackled for days. How can I get a '19 to sound like this?

Coz some time around 2019 JLR decided to tone down (a lot) the pops bangs and crackles on the overrun.
Why? Coz it seems it was causing too many premature catalytic converter failures which was costing JLR a pretty penny in warranty claims.
Those pops bangs and crackles are generated by unburned fuel detonating in the exhaust pipes (deliberately per the ECU tune) and that raw fuel passing through the cats stuffed them up fairly quickly.

Yeah I get that but does that mean they updated the 2018s and before as well? Or just started at 2019? And why does this 2019 sound so much better?

I believe another cause was updated/tougher noise regulations, mainly Euro.
Plus on later models fitment of GPFs.
Plus some customer complaints about "too loud" start up noise.
So a whole bunch of factors creating a perfect storm leading JLR to tone down the F-Type exhaust volume and overrun noise.
I blame the Nanny State.

I just bought a 2022 P450. In my opinion, this thing is loud when you step on it. My neighbors have already mentioned it. Why would you need it to be louder? I feel like I'm on a Hellcat forum

It's not the volume that matters so maybe "loud" isn't the right word. It's the snaps, snarls, and some crackling that I want. It can be very loud but still sound muted and the 2022 doesn't sound nearly as good as the 2017.

If it's mostly the pop/bangs/crackles on overrun you want, VAP can add a ridiculous amount of it to any one of their tunes. You have to agree to hold them harmless for any damage done to your cats (which it *will* eventually do), but you'll be popping and banging with just about every lift off the accelerator.

I own a 2021 P300 with a Ragazzon exhaust.

Went to the dealer last month considering a trade to a 2024 450 with 400 miles on the clock.

Drove the car.

Loved the dynamic suspension, the torque was impressive however I was surprised and completely unimpressed with the sound.

$40,000 and my 18,000 mile '21 ? ? ?

Not anywhere near enough juice for the squeeze.

Not what I was expecting at all.

I left that dealership loving my P300 even more than when I drove in, expecting to trade.

BEST !

It sucks because I felt the same about the 2021 after driving a 2017. Each newer version just feels like a more restricted version.

I have never heard a pre-2021 model in person so I have nothing to compare it to, but my 2021 R Model has plenty of crackles and pops. As discussed in pervious threads, the exhaust system needs "breaking in" as the characteristics change as the car accrues mileage, usually sometime after a couple thousand miles. Maybe that is due to the ECU "learning" the driving style of the owners ?

And pulling Fuse # 15 has a much different effect than just pressing the button on the console or putting the car in Dynamic mode. In any case I'm not going to go to the expense of a custom exhaust or run the risk of failing a smog test with a tune. Or worse, damaging the cats.

I agree tunes seem like too much trouble. It's just frustrating because I just test drove a 2019 that wouldn't crackle at all. The dealer said it could get better as it's broken in but it had 5,700 miles on it. I wanted the car really badly but I couldn't bet 70k on the car improving over time. I think there are software updates that destroyed some cars.

Typo fixed above - should read 400 miles, not 40

At any rate, one of the huge advantages of the 400 mile 2024 car is the warranty.

Don't want to risk losing that with a tune.

So $40,000 + tune + my car ........ makes me love the P300 with the Ragazon exhaust all the more.

BEST !

Dwight, you summed it up very well. I also have a '21 F type R and once I pulled the fuse 15, she burps and cracks almost as well as the '18 R model I had.

I have a 2024 p450. The exhaust sound, if the fuse is pulled is loud enough but the quality of the sound is not consistent with my other v8 cars. I prefer a low frequency rumble that is audible during normal driving, with the windows closed, like my other cars. This is especially disappointing because my 2010 XF V8 exhaust sound was perfect. You can guess what my first upgrade will be.

If you have never owned a 19' or earlier models, you will think that the 20+ are just as loud. However, for those who have had seat times behind all three software version, the differences are noticeable. To my ears, if the 14-15' are 100% in volumes with the amount of over run pops and their durations, then the 16-19 is 80%, and the 20+ is about 40% of the original.
Yep I was saying the same thing 2014-2015 is the best sounding exhaust. 2016+ they started muting the exhaust. My F-Type V6 is super loud and it makes a loud pop on start too, compared to the 2016+ models.
