Default F Type vs XKR

As I make some final decisions on trading in my 2010 XKR, i thought it would be interesting to post some pics from my test drive the other day. I haven't seen any pics yet of the XKR and F Type right next to each other.

Limited angle, but I was backing these up right against the curb.

While the XKR is obviously longer and a bit more sleek, I definitely prefer the F Types more modern look. I was perfectly happy with my XKR until I drove the F Type! More sporty interior, much tighter feel, more aggresive front end - an absolute blast to drive with the active exhaust! Now if I could only decide between Firesand and BRG...

hi verbow. until i seen your photos of the xk & the f-type together i would have gone for the xk. but now would have to say your right-type is more modern looking. but dont like the interior as ive seen in the showrooms for an expensive car jaguar could have done better. regards charlie

A couple of months ago at the Queen's English Car Show in Los Angeles, I got to see the F-type parked next to both a late model XKR as well as a first series XKR. While the F-type is a gorgeous automobile, I was surprised at how tall it was in relation to both XKR's, wider as well. More modern? Maybe. More classic proportions? Maybe equal to but both generations of XK/XKR present beautifully classic design that will not soon be forgotten. One of each, please! I'm only missing the F-type, and I'll take mine in Coupe R form, thank you.

Here are a couple shots of my two cars next to each other. That's a modified XKR from 2004.

Visually, both the F-Type R and XKR coupes are sweet eye candy. I do agree with charlie57 that the interior of the F-Type pales in comparison to the XKR. However, the sound of the of the F-Type R engine/exhaust is so viscerally appealing, that one could be enticed into ignoring the plastic parts of its cabin.

Verbow, mark mine as another vote for BRG.

The colour you choose might simply be how much you want to be noticed. Firesand is much too bright for me, there was a white one and a firesand one in the dealer when I looked (there are very few of these in my country, I have yet to see another on the road), and I opted to wait 6 months for one in BRG. A modern classic in a modern classic colour. Some have complained that the metallic BRG is "not good form". I disagree. I am in love with my BRG. And I just had to have a convertible. Not a true sports car in coupe form. The V8 Coupe is just another muscle car for Americans to drive on freeways.... Now there's a red flag.

BRG is an absolutely stunning color. It is one of the xyrallic paint options, and it is truly a fantastic color. I get a ton of compliments about my car, and a lot of them focus on the color. On a bright day the BRG just pops. It's a sight to behold. It's truly a beautiful color befitting a beautiful car.

What's your impression of the ride in the F-type against the XKR? I'm expecting to eventually go to an f-type coupe once I tire of the XKR (and that wont be any time soon) but I cant see myself getting into anything with a firmer ride, I've been spoiled by what I have.

I'm surprised about the comments on the interior. If I had one complaint about the XKR it was the interior seemed a little "wonky"; I could never quite put my finger on it. Mine had carbon fiber and piano black trim; perhaps it was the attempt to make a sporty cabin out of one that should have been trimmed in traditional wood? In any event, the F Type cabin felt right the first time I sat down. Almost everything where it should be - tight feel - great seating position and steering wheel. And it's nice having a nav screen that doesn't look like it was designed on a Commodore 64. In my eyes it was an improvement, but I guess from a pure luxury perspective some may see it as a step down.

Bruce - the ride is firmer but not jarring. It feels right for the car. I haven't tested the base (I hear the ride is different due to lack of adaptive suspension), but on our crappy Chicago roads the F Type passed the wife test - no complaints about a bumpy ride - but certainly it will be a little firmer than your XK.

This was a difficult decision for me. I traded my SL55 AMG for the XKR about three years ago and that was a no-brainer. I really didn't care for the Merc and really liked the XKR so it was a very planned transition. This one arose from a test drive while servicing my XKR! But it was too much fun to pass up.

In the end I chose…drumroll…Firesand! I agree with all the BRG comments here. BRG is gorgeous, and in the sun really lights up. Who cares that it's metallic and not traditional BRG - it looks amazing. But coming from a history of three silver convertibles, it still seemed a little safe to me. I wanted more outrageous to fit the sportscar/fun personality of this car and couldn't pass up the Firesand - it's fantastic in person. Yes, as a 47 year old I'll be the brunt of some midlife crisis jokes, but as long as I don't end up with the 22 year old in the passenger seat my wife was very cool with the color! Not to mention, when I tire of the Firesand in three years it will be a great excuse to upgrade

Thanks to all for the input!

Just remember, every time someone buys an English sports car that isn't BRG, God kills a puppy. Think of the puppies.

Themacs, do you have any photos of your F-Type that you wouldn't mind posting to the forum? Houston dealers haven't gotten one in sapphire blue yet, and I don't think the photos on the Jag web site do justice to that exterior scheme.
