F type ( wont start) camshaft/crankshaft senors
Hi All,
( 2016 F type R ) While recently driving engine lossed power and wouldnt not crank over. Ran codes and came back with 2 seperate bank camshaft sensors i think p0392 and p039x. I was told it most likely is the crankshaft sensor, bought the 3 sensors but can not find any digrams or location for the crankshaft sensor. Any help with this would be apperciated.
Thanks,
James

Here’s the workshop manual. It’s a searchable PDF.

Motor could have skipped timing, guides and tensioners are known to fail. Happened on my f type, they never really "fixed" the issue. I had a 2016 f type with 72k miles, 3k mile oil changes, maintained it so well but it still went. Good to know if you had any rattling noises before this happened, but sometimes it can happen without warning. Especially since the car lost power while driving it usually point to skipped timing. I would not try to crank the motor because it could cause the valve to make contact then it will be a lot worse.
How bad was your case? What was the damage to engine and cost?
Also no ticking before hand, never through a code and no signs of an engine seize. So no smoke, burning smell, any of that stuff. Slowly lost power and just those 2 codes.

I was quoted 5 grand for the timing chain guides and tensioners. I got a good price from a guy in mass for 3 grand. Luckily my motor didn't fully go. I got rid of the car before it fully went because I hard the chain rattle, I have an xk now with a 5.0 motor. I would get your car taken to a shop for sure but usually people can start the car even with those codes present it's just very risky so the fact yours doesn't start doesn't seem very promising. I don't mean to scare you but save you some money in case it is the timing that went. Ive done a ton of research on the Range Rover forums and this seems very common with the 5.0 and 3.0 motors even with updated guides and tensioners. I hope in your case its just the sensors and it put you in a limp mode or something but I'm not 100 percent sure what happened but knowing the history of timing components with these cars it could very well be that. I would not touch anything, leave the oil in it and just let a shop take care of it unless you are very mechanically inclined.
Sorry this is happening to you, it's not very common with f types but the timing stuff still does fail unfortunately. I hope it's not the timing in your case and it's just a sensor but just wanna give you advice. Do you have any power at all to your car? I'm assuming the battery and everything is all good. I would definitely start with the sensors and replace them and then make sure there is not any bad wiring. If that does not work then it means the timing could be off enough for the ECU to prevent fuel and spark to protect the engine. If you live in the northeast I can give you a lot of recommendations for shops that do great work with good prices because I've been around trying to find a good one for my cars. I usually do most of the work myself though. If the timing skipped you can usually replace the guides, tensioners, and chains and while you are at it replace the coolant pipes with the euro amp aluminum pipe kit and solid eaton supercharger coupler. I had all mine replace for $1500 and spend another $400 on he kit for the coolant pipes and was quoted 4k for the timing.

Also trying to crank it by hand before doing anything to see if it's locked up. If it is locked up, that means you have valve to piston contact which means you need a motor rebuild or you need a new motor. But It could the the sensors or harness too so keep that in mind. Sorry for spamming this thread, I'm trying to give as much info as possible because I know first hand how stressful and frustrating it can be to have these kinds of issues.
