Thumbs up Finally did it; NEW TIRES

So it was finally time to replace the crappy OEM Pirellis and I put on 4 new Michelin Pilot Sport 4S's. I have a 2018 FTR that had just passed 16k miles. The rears had worn down significantly. The fronts had plenty of meat on them but the insides were worn, I suppose the result of camber.

Anyway, "life changing" is probably an overstatement, but it's like having a new car, and a much better handling one at that. Sooooo much stickier and smoother riding. I just hope they last.

I had the same experience -- new MPS4's completely transformed the ride. The comparison is hard to put into words, it's that dramatic.

I had MPSS's first and absolutely loved them, I would say "transforming" would not be an overstatement. I have only done about 500 - 1000km on the replacement MPS4's and found they were super greasy for quite a while which made be a bit cautious, I just noticed that they are feeling grippy so it is time to give them a bit more of a workout.

Interesting that your new MPS4S were "super greasy" for a while, that was not my experience when I dumped the crap half-worn P-Zeros for new MPS4S, they just gripped and gripped from the get go. Except for the first 20 metres that is when I pulled out of the tyre fitter's driveway and nearly did a full pirouette, I had forgotten about the mold release on new tyres!

hahaha yes did that too, but also a touch of lateral movement on my favorite roundabout a few days after install tightened the rectum somewhat.

I imagine you will only get 12-15k out of the rear. I have had mine on now for probably 6-7k and don't see the rears lasting any longer than that.

Mine always need changing around 10,000 miles - it's happened on the three previous Jags i've had, too.

11K, absolute safe max. At 8500 you will be scratching your head.

EXCELLENT CHOICE.

Just changed to PS4s two weeks ago. I too experienced them being a little slick at first. I have a round about close to the house and need to see what these can do.

I learned the hard way about new tires still having a Release Agent from the molding process on them, that reduces grip for 50 - 100 miles.

Bought new tires, then went around a corner I'd driven on many times...but ended up on the opposite shoulder. Good thing
1. there were no curbs and
2. It was a company car...

most makes no longer use release agent, its not the 90s anymore.

i have a set (20inch diameter) of ps4s for sale with 1k miles on them, keep forgetting about them haha.

the reason they and most tires seem greasy at first is the fact that they need to be abraded. that smooth sexy surface of a brand new tire is a little slick, yeah. 50 miles or so gets most tires nicely scuffed up and ready to go. great tire, especially since it looks like itll be a long time until the usual variety of sizes are available for the new PS5's

New shoes for the cat! I hope you took the opportunity to burn off the remaining tread on the P-Zero's (It's the most fun I ever got out of those tires.) I still remember when I made the switch - I could tell the difference just heading out of the store lot onto the highway.

I refreshed the Michelin's last year in preparation for running the Tail of the Dragon, and did the Porterfield brakes, as well. Fortunately, I planned some settling-in time for both before putting myself (and car) at risk. It wouldn't be a good venue to be in the middle of break-in.

The car came with the Pirelli's here too....new ones installed by the dealer no less. Horrible tires. I put DWS06 plus's on the car immediately, now 265-305 in 20's...and it transformed the car (even as all seasons)....more grip and better feel. I need the all season low temperature and light snow capability (drive the car every single day all year....in all weather...). I can only imagine what a 4s or the like would bring. Since I am under 120mph 99.999999999% of the time the all seasons have been plenty for me. Amazing level of grip, even at 30degreesF.

Note, I used to do Michelin's only....have been surprised but the conti's are quieter by a lot...the pilot sports I used to have on other cars got loud after 3k miles every time. If Michelin could just fix that....

I've run, Falkens, Bridgestones (all season) and Michelins on my F-Types after ditching the astonishingly bad P-Zeros (switched at 7700 miles on one and at 2400 miles on the other). I have yet to try a tire that wasn't significantly better than the OEM P-Zeros.

What about road noise? The Pirelli's are awful. What are the thoughts on noise for the other brands?

I can only talk about P-Zeros vs MPS4S as that's all I have ever had on the F-Type, and to my decrepit ears they are very much the same noise wise. They both get quite noisy once half worn or more. But in every other way the MPS4S are light years better than the P-Zeros.

I've found the road surface makes more difference than the tyres.

Are these stock Pirellis really as bad as everyone says they are, or is this just some bandwagon mentality thing that starts to take on a life of its own? ;-o

It’s hard to believe that they can be that bad, but there must be something to it. I’ve seen lots of complaints about them over time.

Why the heck Jaguar would have dropped the ball so badly on the tire choice is beyond me.

I've wondered the same thing - I didn't find the Pirellis to be "awful" but maybe I don't push my car as much as others on here. I've now got PS4S all round and haven't noticed the "night and day" difference others have commented on. Or maybe UK Pirellis are different beasts?

To most people Pirelli is a super recognisable "premium" brand with sporty connotations. I'd reckon the vast majority of punters looking at sports cars would be more impressed by Pirelli tyres than Michelin, and then the remainder wouldnt let them put them off.

I didnt so much think the Pirellis were bad (though the rears would break traction easily) but the change (which came at the same time as forged rims) was a massive improvement in ride and handling.
