Default Help - Choosing Radar Detector

Hey Guys,

Looking for everyone's assistance on choosing a radar detector for my car since I'm picking it up on Tuesday morning. I have an appointment on Wednesday to have the K40 RL360i, but after visiting another shop that I am working with on installing the stereo system they ask why I wasn't going with the Escort 9500ci? They carry both K40 and Passport, but they install 10 of the Passport units to 1 K40 and these guys install these systems in high end cars for very prestigious dealerships. The price difference is about a $1,000, but I'm not too concerned about it, just want to choose the right system. Does anyone have experience in either of these units or recommend another I would appreciate your opinions.

K40 RL360i - RL360i Radar Detector | K40 Electronics - $2199.00 installed

Passport 9500ci - https://www.escortradar.com/passport9500ci/ - $3,000.00 installed

Thanks guys

Avoid the K40. It isn't very good, and K40 has a reputation for suing any media site that posts a negative review. My experience with K40 is that it is better to have nothing than to have a K40 because a false sense of protection is worse than no protection at all.

The 9500c is better but it has issues too.

The best setup would be a Stinger VIP radar with a Antilaser Priority laser protection device.

Thanks Stealth Pilot. In reading about the Stinger unit, it appears that's the top out on the market and is a little more expensive than the other units I was considering. After a little more research it appears the best and most cost effective way about going with things is the Beltronics STI with the ALM jammers.

Beltronics STiR Plus - RadarDetector

The Beltronics STiR Plus utilizes Escort’s patent M3 antenna, which is also used with the Escort 9500ci, the Escort REDLiNE and the STi Magnum.

Because of this the performance of the STiR Plus is equal to that of the more expensive Escort 9500ci, but it does NOT include Escort’s Laser ShifterPro.

Because of this you are afforded the opportunity to install a better performing laser jamming system such as the Anti Laser Priority.

Main Benefits:
Digital Signal Processing (DSP) for extreme range performance
•Traffic Safety Rejection (TSR) filtering
•GPS enabled – Photo enforcement camera database & GPS filtering
•Stealth to all radar detector detectors
•Escort Live compatible
•Can be installed with any other laser jamming system sold today
•Can also interface with our Radar Detector Mirror Disp

Anti Laser Priority (ALP) - Laser Jammer

The AntiLaser Priority set the new standard in laser jamming technology as being the first laser jammer with the brains to jam the newest variable and random pulse rate police laser guns such as the Dragon Eye.

Main Benefits:
•Able to jam the random pulse rate laser guns such as the Dragon Eye
•Small footprint
•Various configurations and accessories offered

Is anyone currently running this set-up? It appears Lobster Claw is running this set-up so if he can chime in on his experience with this set-up I would appreciate it, but if anyone else is as well I would appreciate it if you can let me know.

Thank you

Avoid K40. It's crap. Best option today is probably Radenso HD+ front and back + ALP but I have Stir+alp which also really good.

Stinger doesn't really work on an f type since you have to vertically mount its antenna which would mean a lot of aftermarket work on your front end.

Thanks guys. It definitely sounds like I should cancel the K40 route and look at alternate solutions. I appreciate the prompt feedback, now the issue comes on what to actually order. The STiR Plus with the ALM and what additions? I'm going to assume 4 defuser (2 front + 2 back), Hifi Control. Anything else? I love the rear view mirror install, just not sure how complicated. Also, have to find a shop that can install these items here in north Jersey. Thanks again for your assistance and appreciate everyone's help.

Looks like these guys do decent installs in NJ

If you're going with ALP, go with 3 heads up front and 2 in the back for full protection. Do you have K band in your area? If so, you'll wish you installed Radenso HD+ instead of STIR+ which has really bad BSM filtering.

Yes Beltronics STIR+ with ALP jammers is what I have on my F-Type R and on my BMW M5. However I have to warn you with regards to the Beltronics and Escort products. The reliability of their custom installed products (the 9500ci and the STIR+) is not great. I have had 4 of them over the years, and I have gotten 2 tickets from thinking the device was working when it was in fact malfunctioning. I have made 3 repair claims with them, and I wouldn't buy their product again. Next time, I will just pay up and get the Stinger.

There will be a lower cost alternative coming out soon from ALP which will be using a Radenso radar for their solution. Don't think this option is out yet.

The ALP jammer is excellent though.

Datsports, I just bought the 9500ix. Suggestions on how and where to mount it? Did you hard wire it (I can not deal with the thought of that wire hanging down). Seems like I should get the Escort Live cord, right?

Thanks!

My suggestion would be to return it and get a better radar detector.

LOL.. I'm 75% sure I'm going with the STiR + ALP Jammers (3 front and 2 in rear). I do want to thank everyone for your assistance on the recommendations. I do love the Stinger, but it was about a thousand dollars more so went this route. I pick up the car tomorrow and then on Thursday talk to the guys about the radar and stereo overhaul.

I understand. I made the same choice when I equipped my Jag.

I haven't ruled out the radenso hd+ just yet, I'm hoping the shop can explain how the two systems interact with one another and the alerting system to the driver. The BSM filtering apparently sucks really bad on the Escort/Beltronic product lines and here in Jersey K band is used widely so don't want all those false readings. Thanks again

If k band is used I wouldn't go for stir. K band falsing on it is insane. You'll most likely turn the band off instead. Radenso should be a better choice of you need K. The shop will most likely have never heard of Radenso but if you buy it yourself they should be able to install. Another advantage of Radenso is no display so even stealthier and no squeezing it in the rear view mirror.

Without getting into a professionally installed set up, is there a windshield model that you recommend?

I'm using Waze, and also like the idea of the crowd sourced aspect of Escort's "Escort Live".

unless you're going with something top flight like the stir/9500ci/stinger with the ALP jammers, you're better off having nothing ... imo, bad radar detectors lure you into a false sense of security.

This is probably another great debate. I have been happy with V1 over the years. On my Jag I have a Blendmount and it is powered from the mirror. I had an Escort on my previous fun car and I was not fully satisfied as it had too many false alarms from the new Blind Spot/Cruise control radars. I do not have those problems with my new V1 and it has not failed to alert me of a police radar, that I have noticed so far.
Of course I know it will never protect me from instant-on or laser, but that is always the gamble.
