Introduction and question about winter driving
Hi everyone,
I am a proud new owner of a 2016 F-Type R AWD, and I just wanted to share my experiences to try to setup my question.
I have had a wide range of performance driving from track and HPDE, autocross, and even 5 years of professional rally driving in Rally America and Canadian Rally Championships. I have owned a wide variety of cars over the last 20 years and many have been AWD vehicles similar to my Jag. I have only had the car a few days, so I am trying to figure out the unique personality of the car (has been a fun experience). It is surprising how much variation there can be with every AWD experience, and this particular car is by far the most unusual I have experienced.
Here is a brief rundown of my past AWD cars:
2013 Subaru STI
2011 Mitsubishi Evo X
2009 Audi S4
2008 Audi TT
2005 Subaru STI
The Subaru and Mitsubishi AWD felt practically seamless in their operation as they are almost always driving all 4 wheels, however the Haldex system on the Audi's were Front biased, and sent power backwards when needed (understeer central). This Jag as I understand is almost all RWD and then power is sent to the front as needed (and I guess in some cases it has the front already engaged for leaving the line etc...).
If you have made it this far, then it is time for my question:
For those that winter drive the AWD cars, what has your experience been like? Is the car challenging to drive with the way power gets shuffled around, or does the car create a pretty seamless experience? I know it has snow mode, so I imagine it does a partial (or maybe full) lock on the center differential, I am just curious how others have found it to behave.
Since the weather here in Winnipeg gets extremely cold and with plenty of snow, obviously some form of high-end snow tires will be installed (Nokians will be put on if they have the size). Please share your experiences as I am very excited to drive this beast all year round!
Thanks,
Breaker
