Some of it is practicalities of an all electric platform. I'd bet pretty good money that its some version of a "skateboard" platform with the battery packs between the front and rear wheels, under the passenger compartment. That adds a certain amount of height that you just have to accept. The footwells are no longer the "bottom" of the car, as they are on the F-Type.

I'll probably get a fair amount of flak, but I'm not a fan of most of the historical Jaguar sedans. Just not my preferences -- give me an E46 330i with the M styling package. Just my personal preferences. So, does the fact that I think it's ugly matter? Probably not a lot. It only matters whether enough people think it looks good and/or like how it performs to make it a profitable product line.
Actually a pretty cool fact on this, they engineered a 'gap' in the battery pack to allow the rear seat footwell to have more space without pushing the roof line up. So there is battery in the floors, more or less between the wheels, but there's an opening in the middle. They also used the long hood shape, which gives extra space between the front wheels and cowl, to put EV specific parts (think inverters and other electronic modules). The packaging is pretty neat. Gonna suck to work on for my techs.

Nobody is going to cross shop these cheap China EVs vs the new Jag. It will compete very upmarket, as the post above mentioned, the target is Rolls Royce level owners. Not people who think they can buy a Taycan for $30k from China.

That said it's a bit fascinating that the F-Type initially was a hybrid when it was revealed now 15(!) years ago in its C-X16 concept form.
