Default Manual V6 S - Tune Safe?

Good Day everyone! I am looking to pick up the velocity AP tune for the Jag but I wasn't able to find much info on people who have done it with Manual trans. I just want to know if the clutch is going to be able to handle the added HP. Most of these are Auto and it obviously works with that. If anyone has experience I would love to hear about it!

Thanks in advance!

I have been running with the tune for almost six years now, and tune plus lower pulley for over two. The mileage in the last two years is down significantly from previous, but I haven't had any issues. I'll note a few things:

- If you're still on the original clutch you're living on borrowed time (and would have one the few surviving Gen 1 clutches, as most have self-destructed by now)
- I'm generally gentle on the clutch and gearbox, but not the engine. I'll hammer the throttle, but only once the clutch is fully engaged, and I don't "speed shift". Rebuilding Saab transaxles was my bread and butter way back when so I've seen what happens to the gears and synchros, although it was generally the pinion bearings that led to the rebuild.
- Average fuel economy shows no discernable difference, and I track it with every tank.
- Performance is noticeably improved

@lizzardo Thank you for the info! I purchased it at 30k miles 2 months ago so I will have to check and see if its oem clutch. I have beat on it a bit and it took like a champ so I think it may be good. Looking forward to feeling the difference. Cheers

The 4th gen OEM clutch is hanging in there just fine after 20k miles .

I have the "stage 2" tune with the upgraded crank pulley on my MT. I try to have some mechanical sympathy for it as mentioned above. There is also the stage 3 tune with a supercharger pulley (475hp), and stage 4 with E85 (500+hp) but honestly at that point you're so far above the design limits of the ZF S6-45 that I would be wary.

For reference, in the BMW applications, the S6-45 is rated for 470Nm which is ~345 ft lb. I couldn't find the #s specifically for the F-Type but i can't image it would be too different. Anyways, stock the S is at 332 which is under that limit. With the stage 2 tune, you're at 440ft lb.

Keep in mind that these are *peak* values -- it's still up to the driver whether & when to thrash the poor thing

One more thing I'll add: since getting Stage 2, I most certainly do not use the throttle sensitivity adjustment that's offered in "Dynamic" mode (lots of people probably don't use it anyway since all it does is front-load the throttle and make it twitchy).

With the manual especially: shifting into gear + rolling onto the throttle + front-loaded throttle + loads of torque + suspect transmission = I'd rather not find out.

I thought I'd found specs at one point but I can no longer find them. It seems I was smart enough to save the lubricant specs, but that's about it. I was thinking the peak was about 435 lb-ft or so but that doesn't match the discussion here. I expect the bearings will start to get noisy at some point, and that if I were in the habit of dumping the clutch for hard launches something else would break first.

My first tune was overly sensitive in a certain range of conditions but I heard they had an updated version that addressed that. All it took was an email query and an update was on the way. It did address that, although I've never used the dynamic throttle setting anyway.

Default 16 f type s manual- tune

Old thread but interested to hear anything that's changed over the last few years with your stage 2 tune on your S in manual. I recently bought a 2016 s with 30k miles...tempted to go for the stage 2 vap tune but also slightly hesitant. Would love to hear anything you guys had to say. Any regrets tips suggestions...also I'd really love to get a short throw shifter but sounds like they were a short run production since there weren't many f types made in manual trans..but if anybody knows of a short throw that'd be a fun and great addition 👍🏻. It's just used as a fun weekend car and won't have many miles put on it or driven too hard but wondering if the tune would make the few times I drive it per year worth while

Thank you,

Kevin

@Unhingd doesn't spend much time here anymore, but he was one of the first to do both pulleys and VAP tune on a manual V6S. He also developed the short shifter, you could ask if he knows where any more are.

The first batch were manufactured to his specs. I got one of those, but after the company decided it was too small a market, discontinued them. He then conspired with a local welder to figure a process for converting the original, and would exchange them so he got a core in return. I sent my original to him when he got that going since I'm not going back, and to support the effort. It's certainly possible he has one still, but I haven't heard any discussion on them in a few years now.

Default F type s manual tune/shifter

Gotcha guys, thanks a ton. Yes I'm very new to the forum and attempted to send him a message but was prompted by some "this function is not available to you" type of message which must be me being too new with not enough posts. Reading all of the negatives to f types manual..maybe it's best I just continue to be as nice as I can lol and not modify it. I don't drive often enough but manual is something I felt was needed (for me) every few years I get the itch to try a new car so we'll see how long the f type lasts. Love to keep em all but in order to make room for the next the current car sadly always has to go. In the mean time I do love the f type looks-just would have loved it to have that v8 grunt and power paired with a solid manual..wild jaguar couldn't do it. Ian Callum should have persuaded them to follow aston Martin's vantage path😎 still love the car. Thank you guys, ill see when my "permissions" get granted and attempt to message unhingd seems like a very knowledgeable f type owner.

I'm a manual purist, mine has been my daily for 13 months/7K spirited miles mostly on twisty countryside roads here in the UK, always in Dynamic mode. It's the base model 2018 model year pre GPF. Every drive has been absolutely amazing. Not once I felt it lacked power, quite the opposite. Given the UK climate, I feel that more power would possibly take some of the enjoyment of taking it to the limit while remaining balanced and well planted on the roads around me. And (shocker) I roll on OE Pzero tyres! I found them excellent but I replace tyres when they get to 3mm.

If I lived in a hotter, drier place or thought about tracking it, I might be persuaded to tune it.

Default F type s tune

Thanks for the input man, I think you're right sticking with original is best. Not that I'm looking to sell anytime soon but modified cars always seem to suffer more when it comes to selling. I always like the sounds of extra hp but reliability is more important..380hp should keep me content enough. I did end up swapping the rear brakes for the "R" sized 376mm rear rotors and calipers just for the visual appeal..looks much better behind the rim with full size rotors. Good to hear no issues with the manual. When I got the car in November I decided to keep it garaged and off the salty winter roads so it's just been sitting. Anxious for spring time here in Chicago IL. I keep wanting to mess with the darn car sitting in the garage all alone lol too tempting to touch and slightly change minor things while keeping the clean oem look which is already so great.

Thanks to Dave (@DJS) for referencing me. I just finished an FJ40 resto-mod project last year and am part way through an A-H 3000 project (I NEED MORE GARAGE SPACE!!), so haven't had time to monitor the F-Type forum in years. However, you can always get my attention via bat signal (@unhingd). My F-Type is feeling ignored.
1. The VAP stage 2 tune is perfect for the MT V6S. Stuart at VAP has worked out the kinks and has managed to get smooth throttle response. Howerver, I would pass on the undersize SC pulley on the V6 and just do the oversized crank pulley and tune. The additional spin from the smaller pulley is just enough for the TVS 1320 SC to spin too fast at high rpm and lose too much adiabatic efficiency. The two pulleys together on the TVS1900 SC for the V8 work just fine. Check with Stuart to see what his current recommendations are. He might have some new insight on what to do.
2. @Ksducati: Yes, I am still delivering short-shifters upon request. $250 delivered plus a $200 refundable core charge. Takes about 7-10 days to get it out to you. Post enough so you can PM me, and I'll hook you up. That shifter transforms the shifting experience.

Default F type s tune/ short shifter

Sounds great unhingd, those fj40's are extremely cool when done up, great looking car. AS3000 will be a fun ride as well, very cool. The short shifter sounds great, think I'll go through with it👍🏻. I've changed a few on Hondas but that's about it..Hopefully it's fairly straight forward and easy like the Hondas were for removing. Maybe I'll hold off on the tune and hope they have another sale in the near future on their vap stage 2 tune with just the crank pulley-no sc pulley. Thanks all and thank you Lance. Always happy to hear any recommendations tips or guidance for tune and swapping the shifter out! Shorter smoother throw would be enjoyable.

I also recommend the VAP Stage 2 tune for the MT. It's a fun DIY project over several hours that requires some careful work in tight spaces and scraped knuckles, but the end result is worth it. And the clutch handles it just fine.

I specifically asked the crew at VAP for a tune that eliminated the overrun during shifting past 4K. They delivered!

Now I just have a nice burble after shifting (no pops, bangs, crackles) and lower risk of premature catalytic converter and O2 sensor failure. Being able to shift quickly, freely, and smoothly with the increased HP and no loud detonation in my cats has made the car an absolute joy to drive.
