Does anyone know how much of the stud can be safely trim down? 3mm, 5mm, 10mm, more?

I keep going back and forth on this

I would not grind much past the beginning of the thread (~5mm), though you could go to 10mm. However, grinding into the thread without chamfering the end and chasing the thread will risk cross threading of the nut at some point in the future.
