Default Long Rant

OK, I splurged and bought the update. I highly recommend that you avoid it! This is the worst update I have ever had to do to any vehicle. That was 4 hours of my life I will never get back.
My normal procedure is put the car on a battery maintainer, turn the ignition on without starting the car, turn off lights and other accessories, and do the update.
Jaguar in its infinite wisdom decided to employ an automatic shutdown of the infotainment system, if the car is not running, to save energy. So every 10 minutes it would shutdown. I would restart but the system would not restart unless A) it sat idle for some period or B) I would lock and unlock the car before turning the ignition back on.
I had hoped to just initiate the update and do some other things but I ended up sitting in the car restarting the system every 10 minutes.
I suppose a dealer just lets the engine run for the nominal 3 hour update or has some Jaguar workaround that I could not noodle out.
Arghh!

Wouldn't it have just been easier to load the update while you were driving the car?

It says 2 hours and 50 minutes. That is about 3 weeks at this time of year for me. If you drive your car to work, yes.

I installed the first half while commuting to work, and finished it on the way home. Agreed, it could be more convenient.

Does anyone know how to get an update to 'CDDB' or Gracenote which does the track ID for CD's that are uploaded?

I think it comes along with the map update. Haven't seen a way to do that separately - my 2009 Mercury is the same way.

Newbie here... I posted on another thread before I saw this one.. Sorry guys !! I got the new updates for my 2012 and went thru the very lengthy install, but I don't see any changes. Is it just adding roads? There is no new functionality in the system? How can I tell what it the current release of maps I'm running? Any help to this doofus will help!
Thanks,
Seattle Jag

Check map version this way

The year is the middle two digits, like V 30.13.01 would be 2013 publication, but classed as 2014 maps.

Yes, it's a map and POI update, no other features.

If I buy the thumb drive and install myself (2012 XF), does the sound system still work during the install? I would have to schedule a couple-hour trip for the install, and would want the music.

I had the dealer install an update in 2014, and, yes, they ran the car the entire time. I took it in last week for the 2017 update, and they said they obtained an unlock code from the website, but it didn't work. They said they would have to contact Jaguar; who knows how long that will take.

I don't know whether they have a generic thumb drive, a bunch in stock, or download directly, but they didn't have to order one.

Pretty sure the stereo still worked during the update. I did it while commuting to work. It didn't finish, but it resumed where it left off - think it took a round-trip and a half (35-45 min each way).

The Landrover Discover I was loaned for my service call had a tiny card that had all the navigation data on it. It just plugged into the center console.
