Default OBD battery discharge question

i Understand there is a battery discharge issue if anything is connected to the OBD port and it requires a disconnect of the battery to fix. How do you diagnose if the issue exists and if the battery disconnect and connect has solved it?

the park button (P) on the stick stays lit for longer then 30 mins after you turn off the ignition is my first clue...

I think the hazard switch on the dash stays lit too, though I haven't had this issue.

+1. Also, if you get a “battery low warning” the day or 2 after the car was last driven, it indicates the reboot is needed.

park indicator on gear stick turns off and the hazard light after two or three minutes. Looks like it did the trick

I have connected the VAP tuning device to the obd several times by now, no issue with the battery discharge or anything else.

I believe general consensus (unhidged, ftype17, etc) from a previous thread is that if the device "disconnects" from the obdII connection in the proper fashion and not just unpluged while the link is still open it will not stay on, but that isn't always possible with some of the basic code scanners so who knows 100%.

This does appear to be the case. I've had zero issues, even when I just used the VAP tool to scan for codes. I have a ScanGauge and a good quality Bluetooth OBDC device that both give the battery problem though. This is a software defect, although I don't see JLR stepping up to fix it. They haven't yet and it's been a known issue for several years now.

I haven’t had any issues with the Kiwi 3, DA-Dongle, and IIDTool.
