60% oil consumption is not normal in any car, old or new.
Either the sensor is bad or you need new engine.
BTW to use 5 qts of oil in 3500km you would see smoke or an oil leak where you park.
One other possibility is that if someone changed the oil (i dont know why they would) they could have under-filled it, since its not so easy to tell oil level as you can see for yourself.

"14S never burned a quart, just turned 10k. By the way our Maserati Ghibli is 9k and 2 years and never burned a quart. I think the specific oil for these cars makes a difference.

Also have not seen any oil consumption after 7000 km / 4350 miles. I changed the oil already once (after break-in) but it has been always stable (checking the level once a month).

Ladies,
That's not 60% consumption of 5 quarts, that's 60% consumption of 1 quart. 1/2 quart consumption during the first 2k miles of break-in is typical.

I think you have to be less cryptic for the sake of international audiences.
Are you advising Tom that the oil gauge does not represent 8 qts- it represents 1 qt. And further its normal to loose half of that during breakin.

so just to be clear; the low bar on the display would represent being 1 quart(litre) low?

Thx
Dave

Not language mate, we are not all as cerebral. Look above my post, someone else is also requesting clarity.

Just noticed your signature, I too have 77 FJ40 absolutely showroom. Reference grade.

I'm not sure of the exact quantity, but the upper and lower marks on the gauge represent the same as the upper and lower marks on a conventional dipstick. Thus, when the oil level registers at the low mark, guidance is to add one qt or liter to keep the level between the two marks.

The manual doesn't indicate how much oil would be required to get from the min to the max, but it does say that if topping off is required, it will tell you how much, i.e. 'Add 0.5 quart'.

Logical guess would be that it could not be a 8qt representation, because with it as low as in the picture above it should not even let you start the car. And lets not overlook that its saying the oil is OK. In fact I think it may be showing its overfilled by .25qts

Other messages the oil level check will generate:
"Engine Oil Level Overfilled"
"Engine Oil Level Underfilled" (in which case you should add 2.6 pints and check the level again)
"Engine Oil Level Not Available" (level is stabilizing, switch off the engine, wait, and check again)

These are all in the manual.

I would get your engine checked out immediately. The oil level check indicator checks for the entire oil level; not 1 quart increments. This is from the repair manual:

No, it is definitely not showing overfilled by .25 qts.

Perhaps this old thread will enlighten some.

This is weird. Why press the cruise control button twice when there is an oil level check on the steering wheel menu button?

Comments on this tread, including oil consumption during break-in, had me concerned. I have 3900 miles on my bought new F-Type Base V6 after 6 months of ownership. So I decided to go down and check the oil level just now. The display shows the oil level at perfectly full. I last drove my car 24 hours ago so it was cold in garage, about 55 degrees F. I have checked the oil at other times and it has always read full, but I have not attempted reading 10 minutes after a hot shutdown.

I don't think it is "normal" to burn much oil at all, including during break-in, unless there is a serious problem, My other cars, most recently Audis and BMWs never burned any oil at all at any time when I had them. If I get a low oil warning light on my F-Type, I am first going to suspect the sensor, unless I see blue smoke or oil under the car. So I'm in agreement with Q&C on this one. And oh, I did follow the Jaguar recommendation during break-in for what that's worth, and I do not race my car in any case.
