oil level reading

Default oil level reading

checked my oil reading (after two days out of service ) it said over fill , started it for 5 min ,let it set overnight and now it reads ok whats the deal

Sounds like you're fine - maybe on the edge of a slight overfill. Ideally, you should check the oil after driving enough to warm the engine/oil, park on level ground, and let the car sit for 10 minutes or so for the distributed oil to drain back into the sump. My guess is that you're in the range where there would be enough residual scattered around that it will test OK.

thanks have tried all that just not an old dipstick car just seems strange that the j car is the only one of 3 that reads so strange

Based on my experience, the longer the vehicles sits (overnight or many days), the lower the oil level reading. I recently had my oil changed, and my initial reading 15 mins after coming home was around 4/5 with the indicator saying "OK", whereas the reading after 3 days of sitting was around 3/5 and "OK."

yesterday (one day no driving)the level sez ok. where as it read overfill the day before

If it bothers you that much (or, if you want to verify what the dash readings say), you could use an OBDII reader to indicate the exact reading.

There is a mention of doing that somewhere...
