Default Opinions on manual gearbox

My car is in the shop getting its electrical harness sorted (jaguars 109 day long build finally arrived - Turns out it was still not built properly but that's another story).
While in the shop I asked for my transmission to be checked out as the gear box feels very notchy as I cross the midline, nothing smooth or pleasant about it. I have been assured that it is fine and the same as another manual they tested it against. I was told that multiple people took it out and all ages that this is how the jag is meant to be. My question for the manual drivers amongst you is - are your gearboxes shifting smoothly or should it require a bit of effort with a notchy blip mid gear?

Can you describe further. Mine is quite smooth but possibly more description would help. Unhingd will be the authority. Assuming you have a 2017?

Notchy with feedback of positive gear engagement is a very good thing. Smooth and rubbery, bad. Now with the short-shifter, the feel is even sharper and more precise.

Shameless plug ^

Mine is perhaps a bit "notchy" but as The Unhingd One points out, that's good. I'm never guessing about what gear I'm going to or if I've made it all the way into or out of a gear.

I haven't installed the short shifter yet, but I've been *so* busy

EDIT: A gated shifter from the factory would have added significant coolness, but I suppose I'll just have to make do with drop-dead looks.

Got it - thanks for the feedback. I guess I will learn to appreciate the different feel though I must admit that I personally prefer the liquid smooth feel of the Honda or even the Mazda gearboxes. Still, I am very anxious to get my car back - it's been in the shop for 3 weeks now while they've been going back and forward on the electrics - hopefully Monday.
I need to get the winter tires changed out fast and start enjoying it in the spring weather - assuming I can actually get it back.

You know when you are engaged. Perhaps after a few good grinds it will be smoother.

Heavy clutch with very deep engagement point, crisp shift with very good tactile feedback when it goes into gear, making it possible to know exactly when the gear engages. Shifter isn't heavy or light, but well balanced. Can't be shifted with one finger, but 3 fingers is not a problem. Easy to do fast shift with a wrist flicking, however it is possible to beat synchros upshifting 1-2 near redline.
