Default Order Lead Time

Hi

What is the lead time expected when ordering a F Type? Spoke with a dealer and he said it would take 3 months. He admitted he did not have any allocations. He mentioned he might possibly trade another dealer for their allocation. What was your experience?

Thanks

Sounds about right. You can track the journey of the ship it's on as it goes through Puerto Rico and the Panama Canal. Mine offloaded in southern CA...

Unfortunately, it comes down to "it depends". Once there is an allocation and the order can take place, 3-6 months would be typical. My order was 5 months.

Mine was three months after the dealer got the allocation. They had told me 3-6 moths, so I was happy enough. Waiting for the slot was the hardest part. As the meme goes, "Shut up and take my money!"

First one took a bit more than 5 months (2017). Second one took a bit less than 4 months (2019). So 3 to 6 months sounds correct, at least in Europe.

As others have noted, it really does depend -- my first F-type took 5.5 months (I ordered it in February and got it at the end of July). My second F-type, however, I ordered at the beginning of June 2017 -- it arrived in Canada ready for delivery at the end of July -- however, they had some admin/paperwork that still had to be done to register the new MY with Transport Canada such that it wasn't released to me until the end of August.

Bottom line -- from my experience, once they input your build into the Jaguar system, the system itself should spit out a conservative build/deliver date. In both of my orders, that date was relatively accurate (+/- a few weeks) (although their system didn't anticipate the Transport Canada issue on the second deliver, obviously)....

Ordering one is the most expensive way to buy the car. You can find substantial discounts if you are able to find a suitable car already on the lot. However, I noted that F-type inventories are surprisingly low, when I was buying my F-type local dealer had at least 6 F-types on the lot, when I was there in 2019 they had just 1 in the showroom.

Perhaps less cost effective than taking just anything off the lot, but a small premium to pay for getting the exact car you want to be driving over the next decade or two.

In my case, additional $8K dealer discount on top of very attractive JLR promotion made it very easy to forget that I was looking for a different color. Plus, I didn't have to wait 3-6 months for the car to arrive and as a result had an extra driving season out of it.

I think in Unhingd's case, he wanted something very specific (not a high volume color and manual). I do believe that 90% of the buyers won't be looking for such a specific build and they will do better getting a deal on a car that is on a lot. While I did order mine, I would have been much better off just getting one that was sitting on a dealer lot (even if I had to have it shipped). You provided some good advice that I hope others take advantage of...

I find it absolutely amazing that it takes 3-6 months to get a F-Type from JLR. Is it the model? Is it JLR? What is the industry standard? Is this why they only sell 2,400 in the US. My only experience ordering a vehicle is with MB and there the time is measured in weeks if you pick a slot about to lock up.

FWIW I ordered my 2013 XF in February of 2013 and took delivery in September 2013--nothing special as far as options, Stratus Gray metallic with dove interior.
Beautiful car, but like a damn fool traded it on a 2015 Maserati Ghibli...still don't know why(?)

we each have specific requirements, that said I seriously doubt that many if any owners of F type will be driving it when it's ten years old let alone twenty.

whilst your views may differ I have never understood ordering a car to be built and waiting months, have bought many cars and motorcycles new over the years, always got colour and specifications I wanted, always bought from stock, lead time from one week to three days !

Well that's one one month more than the 3-6 month range mentioned.

As to the Ghibli, a great name, distinctive, and not a BMW or Benz, but the reviews have not been positive. In 2001 I was tempted to buy a Maserati GT, but I went with the XK8 instead. There were tremendous deals being offered when Maserati re-entered the US Market, but I didn't have the courage to buy a new to the US model from a Italian manufacturer with a reputation for flakiness.

Ordered my Vette and drove it for ten years. Ordered my GMC 4x4 5speed Sportside and still driving it after 29 years. Still driving my MINI after 18 years. Ordered the F-Type and have been driving it for 4.5 years and it still feels new and exciting to me. I’ll have it for at least twenty years if I last that long.

I ordered my Land Rover Discovery II and am still driving it 20 years after. I ordered my F-type in BRG#5 with a solid roof. I couldn't find an F-type coup without a glass roof anywhere. Sometimes you have to order to get what you want. I plan to be driving it also in 20 years.
