Well I know some of you have mentioned the issue of our cars getting overfilled with oil and sure as crap they overfilled mine. I had its first oil changed just done at 8000 miles but I had to work that day so the wife took it in so i'm just now checking the level. The dealership is a long ways away(60-70 miles) and the wife drove it a few places after the service so it probably has been at least 100 miles since done. Now it will have to be driven another 60+ miles back to the dealer. Also I know theres been some issues with the new AWD R's getting overfilled but mine is the S version. Needless to say i'm not happy one bit.

 

While this is not good, it won't hurt your engine over such short time unless they overfilled a great deal or you take your car racing.

 

I'm sure your right SinF but it is frustrating. The dealership isn't close and it's a little worrisome that if they can't even get an oil change right how am I to trust them with anything else?

 

The techies that do oil changes are not the same people that do more complicated work. Not even the best mechanic shop run by master technicians would be 100% error-free. It is how they handle mistakes (own up to it) and how often these mistakes happen (infrequently) is the difference between good and bad shops. I think it is too early to reach conclusions from 1 data point.

 

Also, recheck your oil level - making sure you are on a perfectly flat surface. Even a small incline can trigger an "overfill" warning. I've had it happen on mine and knew not to be alarmed because I had previously checked it after the service when the reading was OK.

I have to say since I've been using dealers for service I've never checked for overfill. Since I will never own these type of cars without warranty I have never worried about this. In digital age I never check oil except before a trip, and then I run by the dealer.

 

Can you not siphon some out yourself with an extractor?

Would beat a 120+ mi roundtrip in my view.

Good idea Foosh and Slee_stack. Update though, since making this post I have driven the car two more times and waited 45 minutes afterward then checked the level and the level was ok. The times before I only waited 10-15 minutes before checking so maybe I jumped the gun. I went by what the manual said and it said wait 10 minutes. Seems maybe thats to soon to check the levels on these cars. I'll check it again one or two more times later today and I will let you guys know the result.

 

I have also received inconsistent readings when checking 15 minutes or less after driving per the manual. However, in my case, it often shows less than full unless I wait longer.

I usually check it 1/2 to 1 hour after driving, or alternatively after sitting overnight before I start it, and it has always indicated exactly full.

 

Thanks for posting your experiences Foosh and it seems that checking it that soon(10-15 minutes after shutoff) must not be accurate.

 

I've had the same issue. Checked the oil after 30 minutes and got the overfill notice on my 2015 V8S.

After reading this thread I checked again - the car has not been started 18 hours. The level now seems to be full and okay.

Im taking it in the morning to the dealership and look into this further. I miss having a proper dipstick.

 

Enfield i'm surprised it would even read after 18 hours cause mine won't read at all after that long. It seems like in mine and some others that waiting 30 minutes to 1hour before checking is ideal. Let us know what you find out though.

 

Now that's interesting. The oil level check should work anytime except while running or immediately after engine shutdown. I'm wondering if you need a software reflash.

Do you get a "not available" message when trying to check it after it sits overnight?

 

I also get a "not available" indication when I let it sit overnight.
