I would bet that the start/stop feature bothers older drivers more than younger ones because we were driving when it wasn't all that uncommon for cars to stall out [at inconvenient places like red lights]. This was quite unsettling so perhaps the start/stop thing brings these feelings back.

I was lucky to have mine programmed out with the VAP tune.

Costco carries the Interstate brand and if I recall I paid around $179 for a new battery. As little as I drive the car and since I didn't know the car drains the battery so much if left unlocked or taken for short trips, my new battery died after only 11 months. Took it back to Costco and it was $7 for a new one. Now I have it plugged into a charger at all times.

That's a problem you should have checked out. It should NOT go in to park!
