Default Possible dangerplease help.

Dear all,
I've recently changed the oil and filter in my 2016 F-type S, and I asked for the recommended Castrol EDGE professional EC 0W-20.
The dealer gave me Castrol EDGE professional 0W-20 but not the EC kind. What is written on the bottle is LL IV 0W-20.
Shall I go and change the oil and filter right away? or is it suitable?Thank you.

I believe you’re fine. Castrol Edge Pro was the oil originally specified for our cars. JLR came up with a new oil spec in 2018, which I think the EC meets, but I wouldn’t worry about using the older spec oil in your car.

Hmm, I’m looking at the Castrol site. Your oil is NOT ‘Edge Professional.’ I’m looking to see if it has any certification info. Interesting that the Castrol site doesn’t show ANY Edge Professional.

I see the Castrol website doesn’t list any compatible oils for my MY14 F-type.

Your Castrol Edge LL IV does have titanium, but it doesn’t list any Jag certifications. I’d ask the dealer for clarification.

That’s weird. If it’s from a dealer it should be the latest STJLR.03.5006 spec oil. I bought some from a dealer in Canada recently for doing my oil change and it was the latest. I was under the impression that was the only oil the dealer should be selling these days.

Strange

They must have changed their naming. It's the correct oil - probably just a slightly older version. Castrol Professional is indeed the right oil, they should be just fine. I have a bottle of it in my garage if you want me to take a picture

Thank you, I would appreciate a picture to compare. If it's the same oil and you are using it on your F-type then it's fine, and I have nothing to worry about.

Thank you, I was waiting for this picture.
The oil I have used is the exact same one.
I guess I don't have to worry any more.
BTW on the package it does not mention Jaguar, only ACEA C5; VW 508 OO/509 OO; Porsche C20

There are different grades of Castrol Professional. The correct one that meets the Jaguar spec is Castrol Professional-EC:

So have I put in the wrong type? Shall I change it? What should I do?

No difference in grades, basically the same actual specs, I believe they have different dyes in them. You're 100% good to go, it's the same oil. What I used was actually sold to me by Atlantic British which specializes in Land Rover.

It’s interesting that these no longer show up on the Castrol website.

That's the problem with the Castrol stuff? Too many versions of Edge and they keep changing.
I do like that the EC version posted above has the correct JLR spec right on the front of the bottle! Where it should be.
It makes things much simpler.

Let's not confuse the issue for the OP

Either version of Castrol Professional (there are only two versions that I am aware of) is an excellent choice for our cars, and is the OEM recommended oil. You do not need to re-change your oil.

I believe the LL IV FE spec has been discontinued but I'm sure there's plenty of stock still floating around. These motors have been around for years now - EC seems to have surfaced around 2020/2021.

Castrol Edge Professional, not any other version of Castrol Edge.

Thank you, this puts me at ease with my oil change.

Jaguar makes no mention of LL IV FE spec?
It is not the spec Jaguar recommends?
Again here is the Jaguar document stating what oil standards to use?
Use what you want as it's your car but there are published recommendations.

Thank you,
I will change the oil in about 1000 km.
That's when I will have the chance to get the oil with the right specs.
Regards.

The important words to me in that document Clubairth1 posted above:

“Failure to use lubricants accredited by Jaguar Land Rover and meeting the STJLR specifications for vehicles equipped with these new engines may result in mechanical breakdown not covered by warranty.”

You will find all kinds of references to people saying things like “I just use this oil and it’s been fine”.

That’s all fine and dandy, and they are probably right and it usually will be fine in practical terms. I guess the only problem is that if you end up having engine problems, that aren’t even necessarily anything you or your choice of oil caused, a technicality could be used against you to deny a warranty claim.

I am choosing to be very precise and have the exact spec just to avoid that sort of potential threat should I get unlucky. Mine’s a 2024 with full warranty so I will keep this stance through the warranty period for sure, and likely beyond.

I fully understand and appreciate what you are saying. Although my car only has 28000KM, it's a 2016 model and not under any warranty.
I didn't buy any oil for the oil change. I went to the main dealership of Castrol Lubricants and specifically asked for the Professional Edge 0W-20 specified for the Jaguar F-type.
They should know, but this is what they've given me.

Yeah, Jaguar dealers should know to not overfill F-type engines with oil, yet they constantly do so. Bizarre.

I hear what you’re saying though.
