question about "instantaneous oil level check"
I copied this a few months ago from a post on this forum (sorry, I forget the title of the thread and the poster’s name):
“Here is how to do an instantaneous oil level check:
1. Pop the Bonnet
2. Turn on the ignition
3. Scroll through trip settings
4. Stop on oil level indicator
5. Push the Cancel button on the steering wheel two times in quick succession.”
My question: Since the reason for the 10-minute wait is to allow the oil to settle back down and pool at its normal level, what’s the point of an “instantaneous check” that is guaranteed to be inaccurate?

This info is for the 5.0 litre XK so I assume it is also relevant for the F-Type:
In its normal mode, the oil level display uses an ‘average
oil level’, derived from an algorithm that calculates and
monitors the engine oil level over a period of time, thus
producing an averaged oil level. ‘Service Mode’ is an
accurate live reading of the oil level and is not a timeaveraged
value. Service Mode is for use by technicians
during the PDI procedure and after an oil change.
It also says:
In order to access Service Mode and generate an accurate
live reading, the following conditions must be met:
• The vehicle MUST be parked on level ground. The
sensor installation is very sensitive to vehicle tilt in
the fore-aft direction: 0.5° vehicle tilt can generate an
oil level measurement error up to 0.5 liter (0.52 qt.).
• The gear selector must be in the PARK position and
the hood must be open.
• A minimum wait of 10 minutes must pass after the
engine is switched off. This allows the oil in the system
to drain back to the sump. Monitoring the oil
level without this wait will give an incorrect reading.
