Default Question For Owners Of 4 Cylinder Turbos

I'm considering a 2020 4 Cylinder Turbo which has a great price. It's nicely equipped however, I've had an 2015 S and a 2017 R which have been a great overall experience. I am fairly conservative as it relates to driving fast and very seldom put my foot into it. However, I do appreciate the acceleration and exhaust tones of my previous F Types. So the question for those that own 4 cylinders, are you pleased with the performance and exhaust tones?

I don't own a 4-pot but had one for a weekend as a loaner and while it's a good car and certainly looks the part, it does lack the punch and drama of the bigger engines. I suggest a good test drive in it and see if it's the sort of compromise you'll be happy with. Personally, I'd keep the 2017 R!

Add me to the list of those not at all impressed with the four cyl. version.
I had a 2020 convert.as a loaner for a week while mine was in for service and warranty issues and would not own one personally. Exhaust was barely audible and power was wanting.
However, although it rode on 19s and mine on 18s it did ride a bit better; I don't know if the reason might be a suspension difference or if it might have been the tires (Continentals on mine vs. Pirellis), but it was a noticeably smoother, more cushioned ride. Tire pressures were comparable except for the front left on the loaner being at 43 psi while the other three were at 36?
Another strange thing to me was the fact that my 2018 340 got better mileage over exactly the same routes while being driven in the same manner. I thought that odd.
Anyway, glad to have my own car back.

going from a supercharged V8 to a 4pot is going to be a huge disappointment and you're going to regret it.

go for a test drive, see for yourself

I've got that engine in our XE, and I've taken a hot lap in the p300 F Type.

I love the engine and I prefer it to the 340hp 6 in power delivery. I also really like the throbby enhanced note that they have gotten out of it. On top of that, I think the reduced weight at the front would make for the best handling of the F Types. I think if you test drove one you'd be mightily impressed with it, it is definitely the best turbo 4 I've driven.

But all of that said, I wouldnt go from a 6 or 8 to the 4 unless the noise of what you had annoyed you and you wanted less. If the engine note is part of what you like about the R, you are likely to be disappointed. Also the power delivery is consistent, not consistently crazy like the R or a modded 6. A much different car. I'd have one in the garage for sure, but not in the place of mine.

I like my 4-pot just fine - but there is no way I would compare it to the 6, let alone the 8. However, TBH cross plane v8s sound like every other pickup in Texas to me. And while, I don't particularly mind loud cars, my wife hates them. I would say the 4-pot is sporty/quiet with a few mild pops & crackles (I did however disable the quiet valve, so it stays open all the time) and its perfect for a drive with the wife. A bonus is it doesn't startle the horses when i start it up next to the stable, and I'm not considered the "obnoxious neighbor", like the guy down the street with the modded Challenger (he's actually like the guy in that State Farm commercial).

Hilarious! I do get concerned at start-up as we are in a gated (rather quiet) community. I see the plus of a quieter ride and reportedly a smoother ride. While I greatly appreciate the important and asked for feedback, I will need to go on a test drive.

Thanks...

I think if you were coming from an "ordinary" car, you'll be very impressed, but you're coming from an R ....

Dave, I keep seeing you around, but it always seems to be when I'm driving my truck!

I tried to be responsible with my last car. I went from a V8 (Audi S5) to an eGolf. Talk about quiet! The electric car had great pickup, was very nicely set up (VW did a good job) and had all the high end features I wanted. The leather was nice, the ride excellent and the tech was impressive. It was a great car and on paper, I should have continued down that path. It didn't have that thing that makes a car enjoyable, though, and let's face it, one doesn't get an F-Type to be practical. While I did get mine to be my daily driver, my commute is rather short and it's now much more enjoyable.

My thoughts are you've spoiled yourself. There's no going back. The first time you need to make a pass and the V8 power isn't there...I think it will be crushing.

Coming from a 63 MGB, well the 2.0 is wonderful.

Every now and then when opening the 2.0 up on the on ramp, I begin to feel when it about to shift into fourth that it is a little wimpy.

looking at the speedometer, well we are already at a careless and reckless ticket speed and stomp on the brake,

The car handles really well. Only an f owner can tell the difference between the v-8 or six or 2.0 standing still.

it is really a wonderful grocery getter!

That's true, no-one noticed the difference when I had the 4-pot loaner, and that was a convertible!

Currently own a v6s and I think the noise is by far the best part about the whole car. sometimes I even think that the 6 sounds sexier then the 8, I've driven 2 4 pots, one stock test drive, with the active exhaust, its punchy and felt much lighter than my awd convertible 6 but lacked making any nice sounds, it made noise, id say prob same level as a cla45 stock. but overall the tone sucked. couple months ago ran into a guy with a 4 who had no mufflers or resonators and it sounded like one of the straight piped 328's I always see at my shop. 4cyl is very underpowered in my opinion as well, but so is my 6 to me. the sound of the 6 saves it. the 4cyl takes everything thats good about an f-type and takes it away, no offense 4cyl owners but honest opinion. Coming from an R or S I highly doubt you'll leave smiling.

Interesting that not many 4 cylinder owners have weighed in. Maybe there's not too many in the road?

Ok, my opinion. I came from Corvette, than 4 Ram's, a Gen 6 Camaro 4cyl and now the F-type 2.0. The downsizing in Europe is forced upon us by implementing huge taxes, tis not by choice so going to smaller displacement engines is the only option we have. (
Do I miss the sound and the torque, yes. Is the F-type a huge improvement over the Camaro, yes. That was a true disappointment in sound and power.
The P300 on the other hand feels nimble, well planted in corners, hard but well balanced ride, enough power to be faster than most things on the road here and continuous pops while coasting when feathering the throttle. It does lack pickup torque in higher revolutions but like someone said you are well above the speed limit already. 240+ on the Autobahn is fast enough for me anyway.

So far no one ever said, only a four?... the beauty of the car seems far more important.

Its daily driven for about 100 miles a day since Jan 2019 and its the only car which I can’t wait to drive again and again and again with a great smile, despite the small engine.
Nick

I'm nearing that age as well, but the way I figure it, at my age I have even less time to get where I'm going.

I've seen a few about but I suspect there will be a lot more in the UK, and they have their own Jag forums. Like the XE forum here is pretty quiet but the UK one is pretty lively. A lot of the posts go to fuel economy which isnt something you would expect to see here lol.

I figured I'd chime in here, I have a 2.0 F-Type that I've had for a few months now (picked it up late December 2019) I honestly love everything about the car, especially for it being a daily driver. It's my first Jag and the dealers seem to only have 4cyl and V8's (at least in my state) otherwise I might've gone with the V6 and I'd honestly only get it because of the sound.
But I did just put in an order for the SuperSprint exhaust that just came out for the 2.0 F-Type so we'll see if that helps give the sound a little better of a note.
Other than that, I honestly can't say enough good things about this car.

Could be you really don’t want to go where I’m headed.
