Default rear window trim issue and clicking sound

the rear window trim on my 2022 F-Type coupe has issues (see pictures). the drivers side trim will be replaced by my own body shop, the dealer gave me the parts and will cover repair under warranty. Has anyone had this issue on their F-Type, I saw an older one recently that had the same issue.

The other problem I am having is a clicking sound on acceleration, I believe its coming from the left side. I have a dealer appointment this coming week to check it out ( for the second time).

drivers side trim

Passenger side trim

have no idea how this happened

Join the club. It's seems to have been a pretty common problem (including my own, yours is at least the 4th report I've read of it from both sides of the pond). Mine was fixed in an afternoon back at the dealer.

Seems like it's been an issue for a while now. Jeesh... You'd think by now they would have addressed this!

Reviving this old thread about this known issue... how much of a gap is normal or acceptable, in terms of not causing leaks etc, for the rear window trim?

I have a gap/flex of about 2 mm at the rear of the trim on the passenger side of the car while it's much tighter, flexes just a little bit like 0,5 mm on the driver's side. The ~2 mm gap of on the passenger side shown below is not really visible and doesn't bother me and I'm just trying to figure out if it's worth to tell the dealer to fix it under warranty.

I doubt if the trim is what seals the window......

Hello all trim issue folks..

My dealer repaired the trim under warranty and it came out fantastic…..they sent it to a local body shop for the repair. I went to visit that shop and was impressed with their knowledge and experience with this issue. If you decide to have the dealer handle your repair, I totally recommend visiting the repair shop to assess their experience with the issue and customers experience with that shop…good luck!!

This is starting to happen on mine. One corner of the trim where the 3/4 panel meets the door is starting to lift and makes an interesting noise at highway speed. It took me far too long to track down. I may try to just get some good sticky stuff under it.

I would check out a good body shop (perhaps your local Jaguar dealer can refer you to one) and get an estimate before using any sticky stuff…the problem is the body flexes, we don’t feel it, and it would probably re-creat the problem.
Someone else in this link mentioned a weird noise, I had the same thing. After my car was repaired, the noise went away. The dealer told me the noise was coming from the rear quarter window.
P.S. I’m not sure where you are located, but the body shop that did my repair is in Darien Connecticut.

Best of luck!

I had the same problem on my 2020 F-Type with black package: left side rear window surround popping out in the rear. JLR dealer fixed it under warranty.
It only took a 2 months’ wait for my appointment, then sat at the dealer for 3 weeks. But, that’s another story….

For those of you who had a noise caused by this issue, how did it sound?

The other day when I took the car out for a good blast I noticed a kind of rattling fluttering noise somewhere around the passenger door at highway speeds around 150 km/h and upwards. Figured that it might be this although the trim gaps on mine are barely noticeable and far from being as bad as the OPs...

That's exactly what it sounds like on mine. I have no trim gaps, but found I could lift up on the trim right where it meets the gap for the door. At around 70 mph, i hear the flutter.

Yeah...tape the trim piece down, go for a drive. See if the noise is there, then.

BUT

When you remove the tape, don't pull it UP, instead pull it back horizontally to ensure that you don't loosen any clips.

++++++

Is this another thing about 'verts that is better than coupes? Heeere we go...

Ok, sounds like that's it then. Good thinking, will have to make a tape test next time the weather is good enough for a proper drive.

I’m not much help. I noticed no noise before or after repairs to the window gasket/seal.

JLR must be having problems with their supplier of double sided tape. I posted a message on this forum a few days ago about the missing trim/bezel on the right side air intake on my 2021 F Type. It must have come loose and been ripped off by the force of the air rushing over the front of the car at high speed. There is nothing left except the remnants of the tape strips. It looks like the piece was also attached with a couple of snap-in tabs but they must have sheared off when the piece tore loose.

Luckily my dealer is ordering the part for me as a warranty claim, otherwise I would be out over $221 for the part. It's probably a good idea to check all body trim parts for proper attachments each time you wash your car and catch any problems before they get worse.

Had this very same issue in my wife’s car. It is the vertical rubber seal that meets the door window. The slightest movement of the door window against the seal will create this noise. At sorte speed there will always be movement between the glass and the seal. Two things I did to fix it—and it is completely gone now:
  1. The door latch needed adjusting as the trailing edge of the door was slightly proud of the body. I moved the latch in a couple of mm. Al though it did not get rid of the fluttering noise it reduced it a bit.
  2. I cleaned there door seals all round the door with alcohol then used Honda silicone grease on the rubber. I did a couple of applications.
the noise has gone completely. I don’t know for how long but it’s been 6 weeks and counting.

This is what I have used on several of my cars in the past. I think others on this and other forums have used this product.

Genuine Honda 08798-9013 Silicone

I took a closer look at the air intake on my F Type yesterday. I was able to peel the remaining double sided tape off with very little effort. You can see that the piece of tape at the 12 o'clock position is missing so it must have been stuck to the trim bezel when it came off of the car.

I'm wondering if the factory used a poor batch of the tape, or simply neglected to install it properly. I installed splash guards on my Mazda CX 5 a couple of years ago. The instructions were to clean both the plastic parts and the metal body attachment points with a solvent like denatured alcohol or Naptha, and also to use the 3M brand primer on the bonding surfaces prior to attaching the tape. The splash guards are only secured with one screw and the tape but they are rock solid after almost 3 years.

While I am waiting for my dealer to send the replacement bezel I am going to purchase some of the 3M tape that is made specifically for mounting automotive trim pieces and their primer.

^^^ Proper installation will ensure that the 3M tape will not 'let go'.

We got a car from a relative that had an accident repair 2 years prior. The side molding was falling off of it.

We removed the unattached 3M VHB (Very High Bond) tape, and replaced it following all instructions. Hasn't come loose in the 16 years since.

I'm going to make inspecting the attachment integrity of all body trim pieces a standard part of the hand washing of my F Type routine. Maybe Nigel had stepped out for a pint at lunchtime on the day my car was built and got a little lax on the proper assembly procedure.
