Default Removing the starter for timing chain replacement?

Hi,

I have some issues with my MY2014 F type with the v6. I found slack in one side of the timing chain. I am now replacing it.

I also found an other issue. The engine doesn’t rotate easy. I thought it was the compression, but injectors and plugs are out and I can’t rotate it without a very long arm. I’m suspecting a spun bearing.

The manual says I need to remove the starter for replacing the timing chain. But why? Can the starter cause the resistance? Not to my logic, but am I wrong?

thank you,

Adam

the starter has a gear inside that would be hard to turn by hand. Not impossible to turn but it won't spin easily.

The starter has to be removed so that the crankshaft locking tool can be inserted so that the crankshaft does not turn while you're changing the chains.

I removed the starter. Not much differance. When the starter is not in action, the gear is not connected to the engine (works with a bendixj.

The timing seems to be one tooth off. It rotates to heavy (feels sticky). I will take the engine out.
I will take it out from the top. See how that goes.

I would consider taking it from the bottom, the whole subframe but I have only done XFR.

I have the whole top of the engine off. Also the cooling pack is out. Seems feasable. But am I wrong?

I have seen that the engine and transmission should go together. I don’t have a carlift, but I have the engine hoist and engine stand.

Advice appreciated!

Sounds like you already know a lot about these, nonetheless after doing a lot of research for the timing job I am doing right now, I found the complete manual for F-Types for free if you might happen to need it.

This is how I do it on the XF. Admittedly hard to do without a lift, I use a Max Jax portable lift. But don't forget you have to get it back in which is often a lot harder than getting it out.

I will give it a try. Otherwise I have to buy a lift or have someone else do it (I’m a little bit to proud for that…..)

I tried to the top. Maybe possible, but I stopped it. To hard to do. I will buy a lift.

Default It’s out….

That worked. No way It was going from the top. To many hurdles.

Just out of the car, still in it’s subframe

I got it out from the top/front, but I bet it's easier to get it out this way and I'm confident it's absolutely easier to get it in this way as the cables go all the way back to the transmission.
