Angry Restricted Performance on Left Turns. Part 4: The Darkest Timeline

Hello friends, this is a continuation of my 2016 F-Type R strangely going into Restricted Performance mode after turning left. The dealership called me up saying they replaced the wiring harness and declared it fixed. I drove it and it was running fine, clean idle and was running great. Turned left out of a parking lot and sure as hell it went right back into Restricted Performance mode and I had to limp it back at 3mph....

The weirdest part is once it goes into this mode the idle becomes super rough.. And then why is it only left turns? Why not right?

So far we've tried replacing:
  • Throttle Body
  • Accelerator Pedal
  • ECM (twice)
  • BCM
  • Battery
  • Boost Sensor
  • Low Fuel Sensor
  • Engine Harness
I am once again asking for your wisdom, thoughts and prayers. If you'd like some light background reading here is Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3. Any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

Have you tried posting your issue to the UK forum -> https://www.ftypeforums.co.uk/

I had issues that were somewhat similar, in that they were intermittent and odd, though clearly not as bad as yours. The resolution was that it was a oversized female connector on the wiring harness in the rear where the wheel speed sensor connects. Issues would happen when quickly accelerating and/or hitting medium bumps in the road, which affected the connection. It took an independent shop and an oscilloscope to find it.

The left turn observation is odd, I agree. The JLR dealer I took mine to prior to the Indy, recommended replacing the wiring harness, which seems to be the default with many of them because it takes no sleuthing.

So perhaps there's a harness connector in the front that for some reason gets moved when turning left.?

See Post #22 here for the full description.

Good Luck.

Really appreciate the reply. That is a good lead and would make sense it must be a female connector somewhere. The wheel speed sensor is interesting as maybe left turns with the wheel going different speeds would throw it off.

That being said, why would that then make the car idle so rough once it's in restricted performance mode? Very curious but I will look more into the female connectors. Thank you!

Curious if it does it EVERY time you turn left? Of just sometimes when you turn left. These types are hard to track down....But I will tell you, you need to narrow your focus to what EXACTLY moves in a unique fashion on your left turn. It will likely be something obscure. Do not rule anything out. For example...When you turn left...The rear of the left tire goes IN to the wheel well and the front goes out, and vice versa on the right (passenger) wheel. Are any connectors being contacted/pulled/or otherwise impacted?

I recently had a weird CEL on my Ford Raptor related to Evaporative Fuel system (I have no fuel cap design)...So you just have to trace everything that could cause it...I tried all the simple stuff...and then just traced the entire system. I found a squirrel (now dead ) enjoyed climbing under my truck when it was out and chewing the tasty wires. Chewed the purge valve solenoid wires in two! Mended them and issue gone! (and so is the squirrel).

Good luck!

Wayze I was curious if you ever moved ahead with replacing the wiring harness after reading your troubles? I've also heard of similar issues on cars after recently changing the battery. I see you have replaced the battery since it started occurring, but has it/did it continue to do it even in colder weather? I think in your initial posts you indicated it seems to be a warm weather issue. From you initial description, it sounded like once the car heats up, there is some voltage issue which is causing a hiccup, but not a permanent disabling condition. Also, does it reset once you turn the car off now that it has gone on for quite a while?
The running rough could very well be a product of the engine management system getting thrown all out of whack because of the voltage issue.
