Stand outside Target or Starbucks. Wait for someone to unlock their car...

The bigger issue IMO is that this requires a level of patience and sophistication that I don't think most car thieves have.

Those are (some of) the people that need to wake up.

Depends on the target. Targets of opportunity are one thing, but someone after something very specific will have more patience and better tools.

The article lost some technical details. To carry it out you need an ability to intercept traffic. This can be done in many ways, including but not limited by rolling out fake cell towers, breaking weakly secured WiFi hotspots, impersonating WiFi hotspots and so on...

That is, unless you use VPN all the time, you could be attacked.
