I should have added that a tracker system is also a mandatory requirement here (for cars over £75k) and that the insurance company in question is Jaguar insurance (does jaguar insurance exist in the USA?).

Garages in the UK still seem to be built on the assumption that we all drive the smallest cars on the planet and the practicalities are that it will be too tight a squeeze in any case, so am changing insurers. The other option I've considered is a wheel clamp, but don't like the idea of attacking my new wheels with that kind of device.

Roll on tomorrow though.....

Thanks, but no need for me. When not in motion, my car spends 99% of it's time in a locked, alarmed garage at home, or in an underground, barrier-guarded garage at work.

However, my main question was how effective LoJack really is at recovering a car quickly. It's aging technology, and I'm wondering how many law enforcement agencies are either keeping their tracking equipment in good order or even still have it.

 

Always assumed that LoJack provided it to them.

 

They did many years ago, don't know if they still do.
I had Lojack on my '86 Olds 442 when the Cutlass was the choice of car thieves. Did give me piece of mind, course if it were stolen, by the time it would have been found, most things would have been gone.

 

How effective it works, is going to be dependent on how fast you contact the police. LoJack doesn't contact the police, it's up to the vehicle owner. It also gives us a beak on out insurance rate, which is a nice reason to have it. You live in a high crime area, so is even better for you.

 

One of the benefits of living in a State like Maine is that car theft - if not many crimes - aren't a "way of life here" (although I'm sure that they occur). Wasn't that long ago when we wouldn't even lock the house upon leaving for the day. That said, my F-Type is in a locked garage. Of course, anything can and often does happen....not that I'm worried about it.

While I used to live out in the country and we left the keys in the car (that was parked in the garage) and never locked the back door to the house, now that I live in the Dallas area, I do lock the house, garage, and car, however, I simply cannot live my life worrying about "what it", and I try to just enjoy as much as possible without worry. After all, isn't that what insurance is for if it's needed?

 

I'm not persuaded, and yes I'm well aware LoJack doesn't phone the police. I said that in a previous post in response to your "dongle."

It's effectiveness is primarily a function of: 1) whether a local jurisdiction has the tracking equipment functioning in every patrol car; and 2) how motivated local law enforcement is to find stolen cars. In high crime areas, car theft is near the bottom of the priority list. I've not heard a single case of LoJack assistance in locating a stolen car in more than a decade.

I don't live in a high crime area, but there are areas in the DC area which are. Lastly, I mentioned to my insurance company (Nationwide) that my F-Type was LoJack-equipped, and received no discount. I've been with the same company for 20 years.

 

I remember in 1997, the discount my father got for LoJack was $30 a year. What a joke.
