Got mine, works great. As for the grommet... just pull HARD! I love to walk away from the car while the top and windows go up by themselves. Awesome. Worth every penny.

Hi Rob,

I
think you mean settings 1 for both Function 4 and 5. Setting 2-4 are not selectable with these two functions.

Walt

Function 4 = Setting 2
Function 5 = Setting 2

Default Right

You are correct I was looking at setting "0" and it was late. 4 and 5 are setting 1. Thanks for the correction. Thanks again for pointing us to a wonderful product!

Default Smart top

Hey all you f type convertible guys.
The smart top is great, I love it, easy to put in. It took 20 minutes. Problem is I played with it for 2 hours. It is great.
Well worth it.
Would be nice if it started the car also.
Maybe they will get this done !!!!

First of all this really should have come OEM from the factory but with our litigation issues sadly that just can't happen. I did read somewhere that in some European cars that have this type of capability when the top is down and the car is off the rain sensor is activated and if it should rain the module will command the top to close and the windows to raise. That would be another cool feature.

Default Thanks Walt!

Walt,
Thanks for bringing this brilliant little gizmo to my attention. I had remote open/close with windows up on my '05 BMW 645Cic from the factory, and was amazed that, almost a decade later, the F-Type would not do that simple thing. Ordered!

Thanks again,

cjp

You'd be surprised how many don't. My 911 worked the same as my F Type.

Just installed, as others have said the hardest part is getting the plastic pin out to remove the cover. A flat screwdriver to get behind it while pulling with fine nosed pliers worked well. Just plug it in and tuck the wires carefully away and the cover will actually fit back over the extra wires. It is advised to disable when in the workshop. I assume the issue is that if it is one touch opening and closing it is not strictly speaking under a person's control and not able to be stopped instantly. I blame those societies where litigation is all too easy!
My only surprise is that I was billed in Euros, quite bizarre and it made it expensive. It is an easy and great thing to install and well worth it.

Disabling prior to the dealer is easy and will avoid a lot of possible tech confusion while in the shop.
I had to take the car in for something minor and wanted the tech to look at it. While in the car he went to set the electronic parking brake while talking to me he grabbed the convertible switch by mistake and the top opened. The shocked look on his face and words "what the hell " were priceless. I then had to explain what just happened.

Just got mine today. Installation a snap. Get from eBay or use the discount code for a small break on Amazon.

In addition to the 1-touch operations (and choices to leave windows up/down), I particularly like being able to open/close with the ignition off.

Function 1 = Setting 1
Function 2 = Setting 4

Function 5 = Setting 2

Love that the top switch now works like I think it should (Up for top down, down for top up). Love this thing!
This another of those frequent complaints I don't get. I like it "up for up and down for down," the way it came OEM.

They want the switch to go in the same rotational direction as the roof. One motion : up and back, forward and down. Up for "up" and down for "down" is not necessarily correct when the mechanism primarily moves backward and forward. Different people have different spatial perspectives.

Im now used to it, but it feels wrong intuitively becuause I want to move the switch in the direction of movement of the roof. Towards the back for down and towards the front for up.

Agreed, so that's how I set the smart top to operate. Lift the switch up to lift the roof up from over my head and press it down to drop the top back down over my head. Unless you've done all from outside the car with the key fob. Wicked!

I totally get it that it's not "intuitive" given the way automakers have "programmed" folks with convertible top and sunroof switches in the past.

I think the change was made since this car allows a driver to operate the top with the vehicle moving up to 30mph. Thus, I frequently find myself raising and lowering the top often several times on the same trip while in motion. I'm no longer looking at which direction the top is moving because I'm keeping my eyes on the road, and it's become far more intuitive to push down or up by feel while driving to produce the top position I want.

I won't be a Smart Top purchaser for the F-Type, because all I care about is to get in the car, start driving, and then operate the top according to my preference and the conditions. I can see it being more desirable on vehicles that must remain stationary while operating the top. We no longer have to waste time sitting still.

Human factors engineering is a fascinating discipline.
