I have a 2014 v8 which needed a new motor. I purchased a used AJ133 for $11k. I bought new JLR injectors, plugs, coolant pipes, water pump, thermostat, motor mounts and sc coupler. Had front rotors replaced at the same time. With parts and labor, was $23k out the door w 1 year warranty. About inline with your friends estimate after you factor in parts and west coast cost of living punishment.
Also it wasn't easy to find a shop willing to take on this job. I had one independent jaguar shop turn me away as they wouldn't replace the motor with a used one.
So far the car runs great and has had zero issues since the motor swap. That was about 10K miles ago.
Good luck!
My friend doesn’t want to really do it, he specializes in German Autos, primarily BMW and Mercs. But he said he would because he knows the hell I went through getting the problem diagnosed, and the money I spent. The $943 the JLR dealer charged to tell me I needed to spend another $32k. Brought my total to about $5000 already,
I would either fully understand the damage beyond the hole and see if you can get away with a piston replacement only, or I would go the used engine route and do a heart transplant.
If the cost is not manageable right now, use your DD and park the car until it makes sense to get it taken care of. Alternatively, if you own the vehicle, or have a lower payoff balance, what would the dealership give you on trade value as the car sits? There is a killer lease deal for new 2020 F-Types (not 2021s). Which dealer is the car in right now?
There are two 2020 V8s in the local market as well, but the payments will be high since they're both over $110k. My advice, see if you can get out of the car, lease the V6 and enjoy the benefits of driving something under warranty that's still a whole lot of fun. See if your employer has access to the Special PIN or even obtain a regular PIN and try to negotiate the lease you want. Save yourself the $12-$32k in brain damage.
Edit: The dealer is already discounting this F-Type beyond the 10% you'd get with the regular PIN. I believe the money factor for a lease is something crazy like .00001 or .000001, effectively 0%. The pricing is pretty damn good if it applies to everyman: https://www.centuryjaguarhuntsville....6b9cf1996c.htm

So I picked the car up at Hennessy Jaguar Northpoint in Alpharetta ,Ga today . I asked about the piston, and the tech said it was definitely a chunk missing , not a burned piston . I told the service advisor I was driving the car to a gas station and have it towed so my insurance would pay for the towing( they wouldn’t pay last time from the dealer) . He laughed, but once I started the motor, and drove it down the road and it ran fairly well I kept driving. Sure, it felt like something was wrong but the check engine light was not on. I drove it 70 miles, because what’s the worst that can happen? It might need a new motor, maybe a new cat? The MIL flashed about 3-4 seconds once when going up a steep hell at 65 mph, that was all. CEL never came on otherwise. It made it to the Indy shop still running, still shaking badly at idle , but not smoking at all, still capable of sustained 65 mph speed. The shop mech told me before we talk about buying a motor, he wanted to investigate cylinder 6 and piston, and the cause.
Someone needs to correctly diagnose the cause of the piston damage before going any further.
Bear in mind, there are no internal components available for the AJ133, so replacing the engine is the best option.
I inquired about replacing the piston only, and was told it really can’t be done on that motor, even if it could, the motor probably wouldn’t last much longer , maybe a year or two so why spend the money now and then again later.
On a related note, I know a dealer inspected my motor, they told me they pulled a spark plug , because they told me there was carbon built up on the plugs and they need changing. . What is the chance a small foreign object was dropped into cylinder 6 that caused the piston damage?

If an object did indeed get ingested into that cylinder, where did it come from? The more likely cause is heat damage to the piston crown causing it to melt.

I was told by the Tech at the last dealership that it wasn’t a burned piston, the piston was cracked and had a chunk missing . More importantly, where did it go? Where did the chunk go? Out the exhaust? That was where I was going, the only place it could have been introduced into the cylinder would be the first dealer when they pulled the plugs.

If anything went through the top of the piston, it could still be in the oil pan.
If a large piece of the piston crown broke free and went into the exhaust, there is little chance of not having bent exhaust valves.
Overheating the piston crown can also allow a piece to crack. Overheating can be caused by an excessively rich mixture or insufficient oil being sprayed onto the back of the piston.
Really a big economic desion as value on '14 aren't done going down. If you can find a good foreign shop to do a short block your costs are much lower. Toi spend $32k on a $40k car makes no sense.
I purchased my 14’ V8 S just a month ago with 20k on the Odometer for 35. I agree, I couldn’t imagine replacing the engine.

. I paid $30k in late Feb. from an Audi dealer, a guy traded it on an R8 . The listed price was actually $40k in January, I looked the car over, it wasn’t my first choice as I wanted a Vert In Firesand Orange, 2015- 2017 and The mileage was also higher than I wanted at 32k . Then COVID hit, and there was uncertainty About the economy. I stopped looking, then, The dealer panicked a little And called and dropped the price to $32. I told him I just lost a ton of money and I wanted to see how things shake it, it wasn’t time to make a large purchase. He called me back 2 weeks later and told me he would take $30k , I told my wife I had to take it , I didn’t have a choice at that price!

Hmmm...did the dealer know something he should have told you?

Congratulations! Polaris White still looks amazing, and good job managing the fun / dollar ratio. Seriously hard to think of anything legal that's as much fun for as little money.

No, it was Audi Gwinnett, a big dealership. I think it was a great deal because the car wasnt selling and about to go to Auction, so I basically paid almost an auction price . I put a lot of miles on the car, more than I planned because it was so much fun to drive. The car made 3 trips to Daytona Beach , I even took it grocery shopping at times! Just not to Walmart because I refuse to patronize that business! Back on point, Audi Gwinnett had no knowledge of an issue! But, I liked where you were going, it just didn’t apply in this case!
