Default Storing CDs

I have the premium sound system with satellite radio. Page 12 of the Quick Start guide refers to the storing of up to 10 CDs for "virtual" playback. I can't seem to find the methodology for uploading CDs into storage.

Anyone out there been successful at this?

Yes, I've loaded 5 or 6 CDs so far, no problem. Check out the 'Portable Media Controls' section around p. 103 of the manual. When you put a CD in, an 'Upload' button appears on the right of the Audio/Video control screen.

You pretty much have to rip the CD while you're driving somewhere. If you turn on the ignition but not the engine, it turns itself off after 5 minutes, which isn't quite long enough to rip the CD. I've had one older CD where it wouldn't save the last track (although it plays fine.) But otherwise, it works fine and it's handy to have 10 CDs available.

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately, when I load a CD the "Upload" button doesn't appear. I guess a visit to the dealer is in order. 8-(

Seems like you have to select the CD Changer as the source, or something like that. Don't have my car right now (rainy day here), but I'll try to remember to double-check.

When you select the Audio/Video screen, the option of My Music will appear on the left. Once you select My Music, you want to select the CD Changer option. You will insert the disc and then push the Upload button in the upper right part of the toch screen. It will ask you which slot you want to store the music in (1-10). It stores the music in an uncompressed format for the best sound quality. My experience is that most CD's take between 10-15 minutes to fully download.

I hope that helps.

Thanks! I believe my problem was not waiting long enough for the UPLOAD button to appear. I'm now uploading CDs.

So, does that mean it takes 10-15 minutes per CD to download, or 10-15 minutes to download all 10?

10-15 per. Yes, it's a pain. I constructed 10 "Best of" CD's that stay as constants, plus a USB with a mix of separate songs and folders by Artist and/or Theme. (Plus Clarkson's Top Gear video.) There's a lot of duplication on the USB, but plenty of space to handle. The CD drive itself gets used on a rotating basis for anything different that strikes my mode.

But, to be honest, in good weather and the top down, the stereo isn't my primary source of entertainment.

Audiophiles, feel free to cringe here: I rip to MP3 at maximum sampling rate available to me (256?) and put them on a USB drive. I've got some 16GB ones that only stick out about 5mm. With the background noise in the F-Type, I find that more than adequate.

I never tried uploading a CD. I have all my old vinyl but no way to play it.

A three speed record player with AM/FM radio and speakers that will encode directly to a USB, SIM card or CD can be had for under $100.00. I can't attest to the quality as I don't have that many albums that I don't have CDs for and I've already copied those to USB sticks.

Ever hear of an iPhone? No download time whatsoever.
After 5 years, I have still never inserted a CD. Used a memory stick only once to update the Nav.

Same here regards ripping my favourite CD tracks to MP3 and whacking them on a mini USB.
Also loaded a heap of downloaded MP3 tracks onto the same mini USB.
Nearly all are perfectly OK but a couple at less than 320 are not so great, and the volume varies a bit.
I have also uploaded six of my favourite CDs to the hard drive, took a while but works a charm!

Audiophiles would already be cringing at the acoustics in the F-Type cabin - it ain't no concert hall.

Like you, I rip to MP3 but use variable bit rate, which often comes out higher than 256kbps. BTW, the sampling rate is usually 44100, and ain't the same as the encoded bit rate.

I tried the USB method but my audio files have bitrates that are all over the place, including some that are over 320. As a result only some files would be recognized, and I couldn't be bothered to go through my files to identify and fix this to the car's liking. I also had an old iPod that was permanently plugged in, and that pretty much solved all my problems but then the iPod died and could not be resuscitated. So I just play podcasts over bluetooth instead.

A true audiophile will cringe at the acoustics in the Ftype. I have a 'Low Fi' ear, so little affects me. I listen to the Satellite radio, on various station, and enjoy the ride, not the acoustics.
