Default Successful Mounting of Radar Detector

Seems later models have the solar attenuating glass windshield, creating a passthrough issue for a radar detector.

Has anyone successfully mounted one in the small, clear space provided - see photo attached?

BEST !

20 years since I used one.

I was considering the R8.

What year is your F-Type, and are you certain you have the solar glass?

How is the reception on your Uniden?

2016, I didn't mount it there because of glass.
The unidens are great, no complaints.

As you can see, my R-7 fits perfectly on the right the side of the mirror. The R-7 display kind of slants torwards the right so I see it perfectly. The suction mount is a stock mount which I have never had an issue with even in El Paso summers which do tend to get a tad hot.

I debated about getting the R-8 when they first came out but I got a deal on the R-7 and all tests have indicated that the R-8 is just marginally better and has an additional feature or two. Nothing to worry about for me. In any case, I have used the R-7 for many years now. It has paid for itself many times over and after configuring it for my area it is silent. Sometimes too silent. But when she flares up you know it's a hit.

The very best place on the web for radar is: https://www.vortexradar.com/. This site has a wealth of information on all things radar, with many tests, videos and programming instructions. You will also be directed to where the radar deals are, where the sales are and I am not exaggerating when I say that this is a wonderful site. The host is simply marvelous.

I have my V1 mounted on the left side of the mirror in the indicated location. I don't have the solar attenuating glass, but the mounting location works just fine otherwise. It's tucked nicely out of the way. As hot as it gets here I wish I did have the glass.

My issue is the glass.

The photos below are from the 2023 P450 2WD loaner car, and my 2023 P450 AWD.

The glass specs are very different, and I'm not sure what I have.

Any knowledgeable help is appreciated

Either test it or mount in the spot outlined here:

Gotta find a static source like a door opener in a shopping center.

Will then test with my 2004 Valentine One, and share the results here.

Not sure that cut-out will be sufficient, but we'll see.

The loaner 2023 has the heated windshield and is HUD compliant (which no F-Type has).

THANK YOU !

My '23 also has the heated windshield, however despite all the on-line info from various sources, I am still unable to confirm the solar attenuating /RFID feature.

Might still be able to use a radar detector, but not sure if it could end up like a paperweight if I'm forced to use the cutouts which may be too small.

BEST !

One unexpected feature of CarPlay is the "Speed Check Ahead" notification. If I'm going over the speed limit, it suggests slowing down to avoid a ticket.

Hi! I just got an R8 for my F Type R Convertible.

Is there some trick, or special cable to attach to power from the RV Mirror?

Thanks!

This is what I used to connect my R-7. Once you get the mirror cap off you will need to use a volt meter in order to find the lead that is hot with either the ignition on or off as you prefer and a ground. It took me a bit of time to get the right ones but I am sure you will manage.

I have my V1 on the visor. It has not been reacting to the radar speed signs around here. In either of my Jags. I did a factory reset and set it to "A" to receive all threats. I thought it was a failed detector. Maybe not...

Thank you for the post, I'll check by putting the detector above the convertible top in free air and see if it gets a better signal.

EDIT: Follow up test. Sure enough the windshield blocks nearly all of the radar signal. If I move the V1 above the windshield with the top down, it receives the signal just fine.
There is not enough of a 'cutout' in the solar shield for the radar detector to fit in that location. As it is tucked up above the trim level. If the coating is on the inside, maybe it could be removed? It is clearly visible.
