Tires for daily driving.
I ordered a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S’s to be installed in a couple of days. The pirelli’s did a fine job for 22k miles but are needing replacement. I’m thrilled to see how the new ones do with all the hype from the forums. The only problem is the cost. I feel like this unicorn tread is going to be wasted from going back and forth to work. Do any of you daily drivers keep a set of cheaper tires to run for your daily commute? I have in the back of my mind to pick up some lightweight wheels in the future and swap the Michelin’s to them and keep some cost efficient tires on the stock rims.
My opinion, having good tires on anything is never a waste even if all you are doing is going to/from work. My car had/still has Falken FK510's on it from when I picked it up. I use my car for commuting with the occasional spirited weekend back road drive thrown in and have no plans of taking it to the track. For the driving I do, I have found no reason as of yet to fault the Falkens and have never felt the car wasn't well planted or without good grip going through some pretty fast corners. In fact, I just purchased some aftermarket wheels and will likely have another set of the FK510's spooned on. Others who have ran these tires speak highly of them as well and they generally seem to be well reviewed. Everybody who has the PS4's rave about them but I've never driven on the PS4s or the P-Zero's so I can't compare but from what I've read, people who have say the FK510's are 80% of the tire for 60% of the price of the Michelin's, for what it's worth.

I hated the OEM P Zeros because they lacked cold weather grip when the temps got under 40F. I could feel them sliding when turning out of my driveway when it was cold (and our garage only gets down to about 35F).
So, we are now running Nitto Motivos on another owner's recommendation. Last winter, they were great, and this summer they are STILL good, very balanced and forgiving in breakaway characteristics. As I mentioned in the past: I don't need to slow down for curves even when I'm a bit over the speed limits...
I'm sure these UHP All Season tires don't ultimately stick in the warm weather as well as a dedicated summer tire, but with double the rated treadwear on the sidewall, I don't care!

BTW, I'm not advocating that the OEM Pirelli's are an All Season tires. However, as a summer tire, it's one of the better ones that handles cold weather better than most others. I never drove it below 20F, but I had no problems with the OEM tires in the twenties the few times it was driven at those temps.

After 10k miles my tyres would be slicks! How can people run tyres for so many miles - there's a post elsewhere from someone who got 22k out of them - crazy!

My philosophy on tires is this.
1. Analyses how you will actually drive the car and how much you will drive the car.
2. Have a realistic budget expectation. Make sure you budget for a quality alignment and balancing. Great tires without these done properly will result in bad handling, wear and ride.
3. Read reviews and talk to people you may know that have used specific brands you may want to buy.
4. Base your decision on your needs, facts and not hype.
There are multiple quality brands that can meet many needs.

My car bought used with 19K miles on the OD came with Kumho Ecsta PS91s and they do fine for daily driving and a few spirited runs and launches. I don't have any experience running other brands on this car, but I've not felt that they were poor handling what I've thrown at them. I don't track my car though, so there's that...

Well, I have 27k miles (3 years) on my PS4S tires, and still have 4/32 on the rear and 5/32 on the front. A lot of those miles are highway miles, but apparently, I’m less of a hooligan than the rest of you.
The tires are pretty noisy now, but I’ll wait ‘til spring to replace them. No point in putting on new tires now, only to be stored for 4 months in freezing temps.

I'm not sure this is correct in terms of price. If you have the option of Costco, and are in or near a state with no sales tax, you can get a full set of PS4s in 20" for about $1,250 OTD. That is damn close to what a set of less expensive tires cost from Tire Rack once you plug in shipping and install.
so my stock p zeros actually lasted 42k kms, or 26k miles in freedom units. I tracked my car multiple times and many of those kms were spirited driving, i changed to ps4s last year, got 46k kms now. I have an awd car, i have no clue how they lasted for that long i'm surprised as well lol

My next set for my daily driven R will definitely be the PS4S’s. But so far the OEM P-zeroes have done well for most fair weather. Starting to worry as they do become skittish in the rain, especially through heavy rain on the highway.
That's pretty shocking wear. Have you been driving on a cheese-grater?
