Default V6S Engine Rattle

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum, had hoped to introduce myself on better terms, but unfortunately my 2013 V6S seems to have an engine rattle. Car was in for a service today and the garage noticed it was louder than other cars they've had, but they don't have the necessary tools to troubleshoot further and suggested to try a specialist. I do have a third party warranty but wondered if anyone knows what it could be. Car drives great, no error codes etc. It's really only audible when the engine cover is off, but obviously a bit of a concern. Car has only done 40k miles. Garage thought the timing chain could be stretched or an issue with the pulley, but to me it sounds more like the supercharger. I also get a "clunking" noise when the engine turns off which I read somewhere could supercharger snout????

See what you think -

Jim

After a sleepless night and some more research, I found quite a few posts with people mentioning the coupler on the supercharger??

Sounds similar to this??? https://www.ftypeforums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=1504

Yep, def SC coupler / torsion isolator rattle.
The "clonk" when you shut it down is the giveaway.
Search the forums and the interwebz some more, heaps of info about this.
It's possible there are other problems as well causing other rattles - loose timing chain, SC tensioner worn, secondary fuel pump bearing(s) worn, but get the coupler replaced first and see how it sounds.

Good spot, I should have remembered my earlier post on this (in the thread you link to)!

Let me know how you get on. Is yours under warranty? I have a third party warranty, but suspect it may be a fight to get them to pay out since nothing has technically failed, just "wear and tear".

In that post it mentions " he upgraded couplings are supposed to be good for more like 100.000 miles." Is that for the aftermarket one, or have Jaguar upgraded the part in later models?

It's under Jag extended warranty so should be fine for me. I'm no expert, but even with a third party warranty, I'd argue it should be covered as it's not a serviceable item to my knowledge and therefore I doubt they can claim wear and tear.

I believe the replacement parts from Jag are upgraded compared to original components.

Pretty sure Chawumba is talking about an upgraded JLR part and not one of the numerous after-market parts.

And I was most grateful of your post recently when I came across it...and even more grateful I have the extended warranty!

This will also be a good time to look at belts, as 8 year old belts can start cracking.
