Weird grinding noise from rear end.
So my 2014 has started producing this weird grinding noise from the back end when pulling away from cold start. It lasts about 2 seconds then it goes away. Only does it at the initial drive off from cold then doesn’t do it again. Vehicle drives fine. Almost sounds like a wheel is loose but all the nuts are tight and there’s no play in the rear end. Anyone experienced this phenomenon?
EPB was my first guess as well.
If the issue only occurs after the car has been sitting for several days, this would tend towards the same answer.
You might try setting and releasing the EPB several times in succesion and see if the problem goes away.

On my MY18 the EPB releases on throttle use.
V8S epd disengages when drive selected. I changed the discs and rotors about 3 months ago. I’m going to try engaging drive and the back to park several times when I go to drive it today and see if that relieves the issue.
You might find this interesting. It’s for MY14 - EPB operation.

I’d have someone outside the car, listening to each wheel, when it happens.

Drive Away Release
With the vehicle stationary and the Electric Park Brake
applied, the Drive Away Release (DAR) mode will
gradually reduce the clamp load when the accelerator
pedal is pressed – without the EPB switch being set
to the release position – to assist with a smooth drive-
away. This mode is only active if either the driver door
is closed, or if the driver safety belt is buckled and the
engine is running.
The point at which the EPB module releases the
brakes is determined by the following factors:
• Tilt angle – from the inclination sensor in the EPB
module
• Engine torque – from the ECM
• Accelerator pedal applied – from the APP sensor
• D (drive) or R (reverse) selected – from the TCM
DAR operation can be delayed by holding the EPB
switch in the applied position, then releasing it at the
required time.

I just came across this detailed description of the EPB from another member.
It is possible you need to recalibrate as detailed in the article.

Seems my right rear parking brake was not fully releasing. I started the car and shifted from drive to reverse about 10 times in a row before moving off. No grinding then or since. Thanks to everyone for your input.
That's extra wear & tear on the rotors/pads and could be a source of the noise just before the brakes release on throttle application. Always best to use the release button.

Though an auto will creep as you release the brakes so maybe just a little bit of wear and tear ...
