Default What to do with stock tires?

So I bought a set of Storm wheels and Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires for track days, but the wheels came with nearly new (I was told they had 100mi on them) Pirelli P-Zero tires...the stockers. The question now is, should I just keep these till my stock tires need replacement, or sell them to someone who could use them now? I probably won't need them for another 18mo or so.

Suggestions?

If I was a track guy, I would destroy them on one track day. Just go nuts.

But you could probably sell them for about 35-40% of a new tire price.

Tires do age just by storing them. Some of the chemicals that keep the compound soft evaporate and the rubber gets hard and brittle. Storing them does not make much sense, particularly not if you expect to get near new performance out of them when you re-mount them in 18 months.

I'd keep 'em.

I don't think they'll degrade much in 18 months if stored properly.

Tires are good for 5-6 years according to virtually all the major tire manufacturers. If they are stored inside in a dry, relatively temp-stable environment, there will be little or no degradation over that period. The major thing that ages a tire in addition to wear is exposure to sun (ultra-violet radiation) and radical temp changes.

A lot of folks buying "new tires" probably don't realize that their brand new tires may have been sitting in a warehouse for 12-18 months. New car tires may already be 1-2 years old, depending on how long the manufacturer had them before assembly and how long the car sat on a dealer lot.

Check the date code on the tire sidewall, which will be a 4 digit number. For example, a tire manufactured in the 48th week of 2014 will be stamped (4814).

+1.
Your best value is to save and use, unless you don't expect to keep the car very long. But then again, even if you have commitment issues, throwing relatively new tires on the car before you sell, may reap dividends.
