For years I have seen people say to multiply unsprung weight by 8. So 80 lbs unsprung, if one could manage such a thing, would be like removing 600+ lbs from the vehicle if that's actually true. That seems a bit dramatic, but I can say I reduced unsprung by 32 lbs in my Camaro SS and picked up 2 mph in the 1/4 immediately.

 

That's some serious speed, especially over a quarter mile radius

I seem to remember there was a test done on a Youtube channel where they took a car with stock wheels and ran it on track, then swapped for a set of carbon rims for comparison. There was definitely a difference in performance.

 

No one is arguing that it doesn't matter for the track. For the street, meh. Yeah, putting on $12K carbon wheels that weigh half as much Will help, but really? I wouldn't want the stress worrying about where I park (having them stolen) or slamming on the brakes for every pothole that everyone else just drives over, but okay.

 

Yeah, dont want to argue but in the v6 at least it makes an absolutely fantastic difference on the roads if you like squirting through roundabouts, especially direction changes. I reckon it was the best money I've ever spent on any car by far. You have an absolute blast at street legal speeds. Possibly the AWD 6 or R not so much as you do feel the extra kgs in the corners, on the track at least, but for the RWD 6 the car is fantastically pointy, an amazing difference you feel every day.

As for potholes, if you go as wide as possible and oversize your tyres, you pretty much straddle the potholes. I havent gone into one since I've had the bigger rims with 265 and 305 tyres, and our roads arent particularly good here. I did the same thing with the mustang, from memory 10 and 11 inch staggered, and have had similar experiences of rolling over potholes after we had floods. I still try to avoid them, but sometimes they sneak through.

I probably should add, I only got the forged rims for looks after seeing it on a build thread here, the weight/handling aspects were just a bonus when I got the car back, so while I'm passionate about it, it isnt as though I am flogging a dead horse just to justify a spend.

 

So I just recently replaced my worn OEM rotors with lightweight 2-piece rotors and YES I DEFINITELY NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE.
I was actually shocked at how much better it felt!

And absolutely +1 on the uneven surfaces comment.

So naturally I am now in the market for lightweight wheels as well.
(I really love the look of my gloss black Carbon Blades... but I love good handling even more )

 

Curb strike specs of 45mph for OEM JLR F-type suspension: priceless.

Roads are not great these days in many places that are fun to drive....I'm sticking with my forged OEM 20"s. The car is amazing as is....I don't need more than amazing.

 

You’re going to notice 80lbs…there’s no placebo there. I can feel a difference in acceleration and show better 0-60 on Dragy when my wife isn’t in the car, and she’s not much more than 80lbs. I can certainly feel a difference when a 200lb buddy is in the car…that’s why Auto Glory always has the other car take a passenger…it makes a difference. And these passengers are sprung weight. I’ve heard the conversion from unsprung/rotating to sprung is about 2.5x, so if you shave 80lbs rotating mass, that converts to losing a 200lb passenger. That said, $10k is a lot…I’d put it towards more power over weight reduction.

 

The forged blades weigh less than the stock wheels by perhaps 5 to 7lbs...each....so perhaps 27 a corner not 19 like some of the forged wheels...that being said, I have seen light forged wheels bend on potholes and when I was looking, getting a replacment was a 6m ordeal...so having oem forged to me was optimal. Also not cheap...but available.

I "might" go two piece front rotors....weight....

 

The carbon blades are actually quite heavy. The exact weights have been posted on the forum before, direct from correspondence with JLR.

Having now "seen the light" (pun intended) with my lightweight rotors, I intend to go all-in on Project Diet (of rotating mass) and get lighter wheels and lighter tires.

I will keep my lovely robust carbon blades and wrap them in some all-seasons for the wet months.
