Default When the scraping isn't sacrificial.... anyone scrape their chassis?

The other day, I was heading up into a parking spot that had a TEENY TINY curb to jump, without a curb cut. I definitely scraped two points on the underside of my vehicle. It sounded like a garbage truck dragging along a concrete embankment. It was BAD.

But upon reversing and getting out of there, the two points I hit / ground, behind my front tires, and in front of my rear tires, showed *absolutely* no scuffing or damage or any sort. I heard it... it *GROUND*. I was fairly convinced there would be external and visible body damage, in addition to the sinking feeling about the chassis.

Now, I'm going to have it on a lift in a few days, and will update the thread about what we find, but I notice the underbody of the car seems to have a fairly uniform titanium shield over the majority of the car. It looks almost like a cage, and I assume this is what saved my car.

I cannot find any damage, let alone scraping. It reminds me that the underbody of a Tesla has a titanium shield that can crush concrete blocks as it passes over it. Is that the case here?

I don't plan to sell this car, or I wouldn't even post this. Doubt insurance is smart enough to write an algorithm that combs the internet for car talk that matches it up to a model. lol

But I am curious as to other people's experience of when scraping goes beyond sacrificial, and what meaningful problems or damage one would expect when it's *really* bad.

My experience *sounded* painfully bad, but looking at the car and points where it rubbed, it bassically means absolutely nothing happened.

So.... what do you know about the underbelly of our white whale, and how string her blubber is? Okay I like Moby Dick, but that's an out of place analogy. =)

I regret to say I also drove over a divider in a parking lot. And like you feared for the worst, but when I got under and inspected things, all I found was some superficial scrapes in front of the rear wheels. I can only presume Jaguar expects this to happen and plans accordingly.

I had never looked closely to the chassis, and that thin metal (titanium?) grid like sheet that covers the majority of the underbelly is likely the strongest piece of metal I've ever seen. I want to know more about the shielding.

I do as well. It's definitely impressive, even if it's not transparent aluminum.

I am a dolt. I meant aluminium. lol Titanium. LOL

OH... the mechanics couldn't even see / find contact spots where it scraped. That is absolutely insane. Nice protector. =)

I am guessing you still only scraped the sacrifical whiskers, regardless of how bad it sounded.

My car is lowered and i ripped off a rear brace the other day, luckily its only bolted on, it twisted the mounting points on the brace which i hammered back into shape.

Anyone notice a coating over the under carraige? I was using a floor jack to raise the front end to install some wheel spacers. There is a triangular arrow on the bottom of the side skirts that point to the jack points on the frame. It looked like their was a coating over the metal.

Good to hear how easy it was. Also good to hear other people testing the strength of the car. =)

Someone else mentioned that I probably only scraped the sacrificial, but the 4 grinding points were directly under my seat, towards the rear. I want to look at it when jacked, next time. There's got to be something there.

You telling this me now, just as I completed sawing it off from my F-type to sell it for metal scrap?
