2005 X350 Fob Programming Oddity
Having purchased a 2005 XJ6 with one fob I then bought 2 cheapo fobs on Ebay . They both programmed up as expected. I then had them cut to match the existing key. When I try to use them , the new fobs will open the car etc but when put in the ignition they do not unlock the steering lock and a appropriate message comes up on the dash and the car wont start. When you put the original key in you can hear it unlocking the steering lock. More fool me for buying cheapo on Ebay ( I thought ) so I then bought a original key and swapped over the cut shafts and reprogrammed. Again the replacement original fob will open and lock the car but will not disable the steering lock.
There seems to be a small wire wound cylinder ( transponder ) in both new and old fobs which I assume is the issue as if I detach the working key from the fob it still operates the car.
So I must have bought 3 fobs ( 2 new cheapo and one original Jag ) that can be programmed to lock and unlock the car but with faulty steering lock transponders or have I missed something ??
Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks
Simon

You need SDD to program the key transponder. Be aware you can brick your car when doing this. If you only have one working key SDD will require you to first delete ALL keys! Then add them back in one at a time following the instructions on the screen. At this point your VERY vulnerable to any power fluctuations. So be sure and have the laptop on a AC cord and for sure use a proper DC power supply on the battery. NOT a battery charger!
The FOB only locks and unlocks the car. Opens the trunk but has nothing to do with allowing the car to start as you have found out. When you cut the key it now will turn the mechanical ignition switch but again until the transponder in the head of the key is programmed the car won't start.
I have no problems with the cheap aftermarket Chinese keys but I was worried the same as you!
Jaguar is way too expensive to buy keys and FOB's from. If you want the dealer to do this they might or might not? Jaguar has been getting real strange about working on older Jaguar's. We have had reports that if the car is 10+ years old they won't touch it!
But do get another key as we have had numerous people post they purchased the car used only got one key. Then something goes wrong with that key and your stuck with a dead car.

Many thanks for the info ! it all makes sense now . I am booked into the car key programming shop that has just done my Vivaro and they seem to have the kit but Ill print off your note and let them sweat over it !
The odd thing is that this is not mentioned in the earlier threads on programming keys !

They may "clone" your existing key. This is not all bad but does not solve the one key problem. With different keys you can program the seat settings to that key. With a clone key the car can't tell the difference and thinks there is only the one key.
It's doubtful the lock guy will have SDD as that's factory Jaguar and not available commercially but maybe he can do it with another system?
