I get so much helpful advice from the site so I wanted to share an experience I had with a bad alternator. Recently, I was traveling to work, my first day on the job, and on my dash is battery not charging. Nothing happened outside of that so I continues to drive with no problems. On my way home my car power started to shutdown so I parked it. The next day my dad put in a fully charged battery and drove it the rest of the way home.

That weekend I took off the alternator. It was filthy, so I took it apart and cleaned it up including the brush holder which I ended up replacing. Bought off ebay for $9. Now it runs fine with no battery charging issues.

Interesting how little it takes to disable a car sometimes. Sounds like a good job, learnt a bit and saved a bit by the sound of it. Good stuff :-)

A self rebuilt is almost always better and this one was particularly cheap.

 

Thanks guy. i would have had to spend $225 for a new one. It feels good to be able to fix it for only $9.

 

Well done,when an alternator fails it often is the diode but in this case it sounds like

carbon shorting the brushes to earth.

Good to know parts are available on e bay.
