Default Can anyone help identify this engine?

We've just bought a house and came across this Jaguar straight 6 engine in the garage. Can anyone help me identify it or tell me where I should be looking for part numbers etc? TIA

It looks like an early long-stud 4.2 litre XK engine. Somewhere on the engine will be found the engine number stamped on starting with 7L. The cam cover rears have the cut-outs that were not present on later engines when the rev-counter drive was deleted. Later rev counters operated using ignition system pulses.

The gearbox is a Borg Warner model 65 so it should be a 1974 to 1977 vintage engine/trans from XJ6. (Carburetted)

The 1973 and earlier cars used a Model 8 or Model 12 gearbox.

The water pump does not have the fan clutch 4 bolt flange like the later fuel injected engines.

The lifting 'hooks' are staggered like the mid 70s engines.

If the oil pan has a 'wing' on the right side that it is NOT a fuel injected engine with the clearance for the 'cataverters'. That would be 1978 onward for US cars.

I used to remember all or most of the different engines but I hardly see them anymore.

If you look at your first snap, you will see the dipstick tube without a dipstick. Just aft of that tube is the casting of the engine block flange (where the transmission is bolted onto), and in the shape of a curve. The engine number is stamped on that flange. 7L or 8L would be my expectation.

The oil cap is what is known as the "large hole" cap, and I dont remember them on S2 cars, well, not down here anyway.

My 3.4 S Type (1964) had that cap, as does my 3.8 MK10.

Also, have a look on the RH side of the engine, just aft of the distributor hole, about 1/3 way toward the rear, most had the engine size "cast" into the block in rather large numerals.

Almost forgot, WELCOME to the Forum.
