Jaguar XJ8 X308 ZF 5HP24 Gearbox rebuilt refitted code P0706 Help/Advice.

Unhappy Jaguar XJ8 X308 ZF 5HP24 Gearbox rebuilt refitted code P0706 Help/Advice.

Prior to removal/rebuild selecting gears but when hot slipping going into limp mode.

On strip down A/C Bearing worn to destruction was the fault.

Changed C clutch drum for stronger but no problem with original, replaced steels and friction plates A-C clutches. Replaced needle bearing A/C clutches. Refilling gearbox oil.

Problem gearbox stays in drive although limp mode. When reverse is selected still wants to go forward and also in Neutral. The reverse lights come on and still wants to go forward although it appears to change in to reverse when selector moved to reverse position. Fault codes P0706 the other codes are related to potentially the coolant still requires filling P0332, P0327 and P1646 upstream sensor. These codes were not present prior to gearbox removal and rebuild. The car has done 99,600 miles and is a 2002 3.2 V8 Sovereign LWB. 8-9litres of oil refilled ATF Plus. Gearbox is quiet and smooth no noises at all. Initially after refit rear wheels off the floor turning in all forward gear selection inc N, Reverse appears to select reverse but wheels not turning at all. Rear wheels on ground now wants to go forward.

The gearbox a-c clutches and steels were refitted exactly as taken out in reverse (back to front with new steels/friction plates. New needle bearing A/C clutch (reason for limp mode when hot initial fault).

Initially after first 4-5litres started engine and filled while running friend was going through the gears and unaware until afterwards he had a speed of 70mph at times. Found ZF oil refilling guide now stating 9.9ltr, oil temp 30-35 degrees C, 650-950rpm hold in gear for 3 seconds etc.



QUESTIONS

Code P0706 I believe is the rotary switch? When I originally removed the gearbox the rotary switch fell apart and I resealed it with rivets! Could this prevent gear selection and if so where can I get a replacement preferably new?

Could there not be enough oil in the box yet?

Could the oil be too hot causing the gears not to select correctly?

Should I change the oil and start again?

Could the J-gate selector Gearbox selection cable require adjustment?

Any advice would be very much appreciated spent over £500-600 on parts not including 10ltr ATF Plus oil, brake and clutch cleaner.

Few choice words plenty of scraped knuckles and cuts all lying on back 4-6 inches away from gearbox. Typical DIY Mechanic at least I know what gets done and saved hundreds. My tools have grown almost do anything now!
