ZF 5HP24 rebuilt. Lessons learned
Hi all, I want to share my experience in rebuilding my gearbox. It’s the ZF 5HP24 and the car is the base 3.2 l version from 2001. Car was driving fine before the rebuilt. No fault at all. But knowing the possible failures I was not confident keeping on driving not knowing the condition and fearing instant death one night in the middle of nowhere. A Sunday... on a highway with the wife pissed off at my side. That’s the scenario right? So, I figured: change the A drum for the new design, change the pressure regulator, speed sensors, solenoids and all gaskets and I should be good. Well, I learned the hard way a complete cleaning will create a mud slide that will likely shoot the torque converter AND the pump. So lesson was: don’t refit an old torque converter EVEN IF IT WORKED FINE BEFORE. You can’t purge it clean and the new oil will clean and clog it after a short while. So I lost my pump in the process. That advice applies if the transmission oil has not been regularly changed. But that’s most cars. Cheers!!!!!
