Exclamation Multiple Key Problems - Desperate for Help!

Hello All,

I am currently in dire straights regarding my 2009 Jaguar XF. I know I made a mistake by buying the car and its value is now lower than repair costs. I looking for help please, not criticism. Anyone who can help - I will greatly appreciate it. | am trying to get this car on the road but have lost the only key I had.

I am now on day 27 that my XF has been at the Jaguar of Clearwater (Tampa, Florida) Service Department for what should have been just a key replacement. I was assured that all I need to do was to tow the car to the service dept and that they could handle it. After a week I was told I need two keys and a new KVM as "2009 XF do no allow for more than two keys and must have at least one to clone or require the KVM) are needed. I don't have a choice but to order 2 keys and a new kvm - 2500$ in parts for my 4000$ car. Now after almost two weeks I called again. Now I am being told that there are issues and that I require a CJB also. I do not know but the two keys, the new battery they (put in against my permission) and the KVM was quoted at 2500$ before labor. So I can imagine around 4000 minimum.

So what is the CJB going to cost and cost with labor? Is the car a total loss now; in other words should I just cut my losses?

Does anyone know if there are any other ways of getting it a key that works. Could I go to a third party? If I managed to find the parts needed; used, would that be a better option or will I have the same problem regarding the KVM? Does anyone know if there is a way to bypass these problems. I don't care if I have to use duct tape to get it going - so any fix would be awesome. Also, if anyone can give me any info regarding the legitimacy of what I have been told by Jaguar.

Any and all ideas/information would be so appreciated. If anyone can help me get this car going I will happily pay for help or even advice. I am really screwed, frustrated, upset and walking 11 miles everyday. I need to know what a logical man would do in my shoes.

If anyone has helpful advice and would care to text message/call me that would be so nice. My number is ***** NUMBER REMOVED - GGG *****

Thanks everyone!

Sincerest Regards,
Thomas

(sorry for typos etc.)

Thomas,

Normally I would move a question like this to the relevant Model forum. However, in this instance, I'll leave it here in General Tech Help because I think members with other Models who will have useful advice would not see it in X250 forum.

I have removed your phone number. Not a good plan to post that on a public forum and members can easily contact you either by posting here or by forum PM.

What normally happens with a lost key I have experienced at a UK dealer with the 2003 XJ6 (X350 model) I once owned They take the remaining key and use it to cancel off the lost key first, then program the new and existing keys using the existing key program. They have an app on a computer to do this. This process is done, so that if the lost key is found, (or has maybe been stolen), it will not work with the vehicle.

In your case, you have no key at all, or have lost it, and I think you are not being told any lies by the dealer, but clearly if no key is available at all, there is no basis on which to program a key. However, I suspect this is not the end of things, and that if some used parts can be obtained, plus one or two new keys, the situation may be retrievable. So the question is - are there any Jaguar specialists near you in Florida ? Hopefully somebody on this forum in the US may know, but about 2 minutes on my PC shows this firm in Fort Lauderdale and another in Orlando. Why not have a word with them and describe the problem, as I'm sure yours is not the first and only case of lost keys. Obviously you'd have to trailer the car to one of them if they can quote a reasonable fix price.

Or maybe find that lost key !!

I fortunately have never been in the situation of having lost keys but I do know Jaguar Dealers in the UK will NOT program used Smartkeys or modules and it is most likely the same in the US. Independents with dealer level diagnostics are more pragmatic and usually willing to program with used parts.

From the numbers you've quoted in your post, the dealer route to a resolution could easily be close to the $4K you paid for the car and it makes no sense to throw that kind of money at it. Fraser's suggestion is a far better approach and, if you can find an independent specialist, should be a fraction of the dealer cost.

Worst case scenario, break it for spares and recover a reasonable proportion of your original spend.
