OBDII Code Scanners ** Member Approved **
I've got lost in this thread, so much info over the 12 years or so it's been running.
Is there a current recommendation to use on a X308?
I was thinking of this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/384979812...id=27038347467
As recommended further up the thread, is that still a good idea?

Hi all,
Hoping someone can help with obd2 scanners. I have a 2006 XK, and have the dreaded check pedestrian system light on. Have had it checked and it is unsurprisingly one of the sensors, but, I can't remember if it is left or right (which is 100% my excuse to buy a scanner!) From what I have read, the RH sensor will be a B1004nn code, the LH sensor will be a B1005nn, but I'm not sure what scanners can pick up on Body codes, does anyone have any experience with this? Also, my better half has a RR Evoque, so if there is one tool that can do both in case her car needs any attention, that would be a bonus.
Thanks in advance!

Hi,
New member here - but not new to XK8.
I'm looking for a good scanner for a 1997 model.
Considering the icarsoft CR V2.0 or similar - which I believe are the later versions of previously recommended icarsoft models.
But do they work for all modules on these earlier cars?
I have an Autel MD 801 which doesn't do much.
I also have a vxnano J2534 but haven't had much luck with the IDS/SDD - are there any recommendations/downloads for going this route?
Thanks in advance for any help.

OK, with a space in it - TOPTQK 280, I understand now.....
How many modules can you talk to with it?
Can you see ABS? IC? BCM?
Or is it just engine & trans?
Thanks, John.

NB, TP-280CAN is updatable via the internet for future vehicles ( This is on page 21 of the user manual , I have not used this feature ) I purchased this unit because at the time about 12 years ago it was very difficult to find an OBD11 reader for Jaguars prior to the year 2000 ( My car is a 1999 XKR convertible ) Appart from the security locking control module requiring major surgery ( internal resoldering ) this car has been trouble free. I do have most of the special factory tools for this car and they proved their worth when I replaced the early tensioners and chains. I also hold a comprehensive range of new spares for this Jaguar, Hope you find this helpful. This car is my hobby and as such wants for nothing, Cheers John P
Thanks for a good reply mate.
I didn't explain well - but there are a couple of reasons I asked "Which modules you can see on it"
One reason is - I have 4 other scanners including an Autel MD 801 'MaxiDiag' which is supposed to do everything but just does engine & trans.
And a vxnano J2534 but haven't had much luck with the IDS/SDD.
The other reason is the early 1997 cars are a bit 'primitive' in their electronics. So stuff which works on younger cars might not on this.
So I'm not asking about engine/transmission stuff which my other scanners will read.
But I really want to know about ABS, Aircon, Instrument pack, Body Control Module, Security module, Door and seat modules etc.
Modules labelled IPK, BPM, SLH, DDM, PSM, etc - modules which I can't read and don't know what will.
Sadly I've bought a few scanners that promised the advanced stuff but were pretty basic.
And I don't want to drop $400 again doing the same ....
Thanks for any help.

This reader cost me $85.83 plus freight $36.76 a total of $123.59 . Good value to have in the boot however seldom used as my car has been reliable due to prevenative maintenance. Sorry I can't be of much more help. I have found a true Jaguar Majician boffin here at the mount and he now looks after the car. cheers jrparkerstag@gmail.com
Thanks for making an effort on this John.
I've just bitten the bullet on a $420 icarsoft CR Pro.
Ozbot on the X100 forum said it does all those modules on his 1997 model.
I'd like to get my VXnano cable going - which is suppose to do programming as well,
it's a version of the oem/mongoose style things.
I've got the thing it'self going on the computer, but haven't figured out how to coordinate it with IDS/SSD...

I have an Innova 3120, while it reads the codes in my 95 xj12 as generic (but still yet accurate), it doesnt seem to be clearing the check engine light?? I dont know whether its me or what though? It showed a p1441...and I changed out the purge valve, the code still shows?
1996 XJS 4.0 Celebratino coupe UK spec RH drive. OBD code reder recomendation request.
New-ish to the forum. I don't see any recommendations for a code reader for the XJS or the XJ6 (x300) both have the OBD port. I did pull some codes of my !996 XJS with a cheep eBay reader but not enough info for my needs. Any recommendations ?
I am considering Scan tools OBDLINK MX+Pro for £139.00 will work with iPad iPhone PC Laptop. This will work with my Jap daily drive but not sure it will work with the 1996 vintage Jag.
Thanks

"Basic" OBDC (2) was/is largely a core set mandated by Government rules and industry's response to them, "brand immaterial", so most any scanner newer than the vehicle Model Year can display those.
More capable and "marque-specific" firmware & software scan tools also retain the basic OBDC mode, so are not overkill as an investment.
From there, "it depends" as to vendor-specific modules and features, 'live data' stream, trims, resets, and calibrations, on whether one adheres to one marque or family, or needs to cover several.
"Mostly firmware" stand-alones, such as both of an iCarsoft i930 and the more-capable iCarsoft V3 serve my choice of JLR's (see sig, below). I don't expect to have to accomodate anything else, let alone "newer".
"Mostly software" units that run an "App" on a third-party smartphone, tablet, or notebook and/or depend on an internet "cloud" or subscription service are not necessarily limited to any one marque. Their limits are set by how comprehensive a coverage their maker is able to keep up with. And on that supplier remaining in the business at all, of course. Not all have done, so their products can become unsupported "orphans".
Older, established brands may be less of a dice-roll than newcomers - features or claims-of quite aside.
In addition to "user approved" one can search the 'net for "problems with...<brand & model>".
Not a BAD idea to run such a search on ANY planned purchase.
CAVEAT:: Bad news always travels fastest, and nowadays 'widest', even 'silliest', so don't be surprised to hear that your faithful clothes washing machine has been blamed by some OTHER fool for mass starvation in the Arctic sea.
"Grain of salt.." etc.
Not to worry. Everything in our lives risks obsolescence.
We tend to pay the money then JF deal with that, as death and taxes are still as reliable as ever were.

Thank you for the advice. The internet is a great resource but not every thing that glitters is Gould. I will check out some of your recommendations, Like you I do not see me buying anything newer than my 17 year old Suzuki daily better, or newer than 1997 Jag, So no need to opt for all singing tool.

So, I have purchased and have been playing with the Launch X431 Creader Elite JLR version and I must say I am extremely disappointed. It seems that every feature has either an add on cost you must subscribe for or once selecting a feature, it pops up a text box giving you instructions how to manually perform the task you have already been performing like every other google search or posts here will.
For example, thinking that one of the features is the "Simple and easy reset of service functions" would be one click of a button, but it is not, after following the pathway to the final option, it pulls up a text box explaining the manual reset of the fog light and trip buttons, something I was trying to get away from as how sensitive it can be when resetting.
If anything, spending more than $50 on this unit is far too much and only opens the door for more expenses one must pay to access information you might already know and have been previously performing.

I bought hte iCarsoft i930 to use on the 2005 XJ8-L off the back of positive reviews, right here. Haven't yet had cause to regret that.
When the newer 2011 Range Rover Sport wanted a scanner (as I keep one IN each vehicle), the iCarsoft V3 was a logical choice, and that one has given me good service (and more features), too.
There are more capable scan tools, but as neither of the iCarsofts I mention requires a "Mothership" device running Android, Apple, or WinWOES on a "smart" phone, tablet, notebook, laptop, or a "subscription", their all-in-one self sustaining head is easier to use and more than good enough for my needs, "calibrations" included.
