Radio not recognizing CD player

Radio not recognizing CD player
I posted this on the XJS forum, but I think this is a better place to ask the question:
I have a 93 XJS that I am still resolving problems with the radio/CD player
I've searched threads regarding this, but I have found no similar situation.
The radio works
The CD player seems to function, loading and unloading the magazine: even moving the first disc into the player.
The CD plug is connected and all fuses have been checked.
I have un-plugged and re-connected the player, even disconnecting the battery and re-entering the code.
There is no display showing CD errors: nothing
When selecting CD/tape button, nothing changes on the display screen.
If you put a cassette into the player, the display shows "Side 1/ Side 2" so the system recognizes the cassette player.
Any suggestions as to what I should try next?
