rear alignment
Can someone help me. I've got a serious problem, my right rear wheel is tilted in\. One Jaguar dealer says it needs a shim $500.00 to install 2 other dealers say no such thing as shim. Possible bearings. i replaced rear wheel bearings... same problem, $1100.00 later. they say nothing is bent. Don't know what to do( I stop driving the car now). Need advice.

RE: rear alignment
HOW MUCH IS THE NEGATIVE CAMBER IN THE REAR? FIRST UNLESS ITS SEVERE(-2.DEGREES OR MORE) I WOULDNT WORRY ABOUT IT AS ALMOST ALL HAVE SOME NEGATIVE CAMBER THATS OUT OF SPEC. AND YES THERE ARE SHIMS THAT GO IN BETWEEN THE AXLE SHAFT AND DIFF OUTPUT FLANGE TO MOVE THE CAMBER IN AND OUT, BUT THIS IS AND EXTRA CHARGE TO DO AND REQUIRES AND ALIGNMENT CHECK TO FIND OUT WHERE YOURE AT AND THEN ONE TO SET WHEN ALL IS DONE. MOST CASES THAT INVOLVE SPECS THAT ARE TOO FAR OUT USUALLY INVOLVE A BENT REAR LOWER CONTROL ARM AND BOLT IF RIDE HEIGHT AND SPRINGS ARE FINE. IF THE REAR CAMBER IS -1.5 OR LESS I WOULDNT WORRY ABOUT IT

RE: rear alignment
thanks for the info. specs read -1.4 degrees rt rear, lft rear-.7 degrees according to alignment shop. what do you guys think? they said nothing was bent, but if you see it i think anyone would say something is wrong. seriously slanted \ especially when people are in th car.

RE: rear alignment
The shop that adjusted it so far said there is nothing that I can do. "Take it back to Jaguar". Which, by the way said nothing was wrong and no shims for this car. Although one dealer would charge $500.00 to install shim.Seriously don't know who to trust. Thanks for feedback badmojo. Without everyone in this forum, I wouldn't know what to do.

RE: rear alignment
Is your car lowered?? If so this causes the negative camber. If not, I would check for: Bent linkage, worn busings, ride height (possible sagging spring), anything in the trunk that's heavy?
If all those check out, then i would check to see if the car was ever in an accident. Possibly shock tower in trunk was bent.
keep us posted, this is a good one...
thanks

RE: rear alignment
like I said earlier, EVERY jag I align is out of spec for rear camber to some degree, and until I see one thats -2. or more I never mention it cause it NOT A PROBLEM!!!. since you have the spec you can go to a dealer and have a shim added to the left rear to even it out with the right. I charge $150 and another alignment when done, BUT I only have shimmed the rear of a jag twice in 11yrs, and I do alot of alignments and pushed Jaguar to change the specs for front toe on the 03 and stypes for tire wear issues( which most independant shops dont know about so they still align with incorrect specs that wear the inside edges of the front tires) Anyway most issues when the camber is out ends up being bent lower control arm bolts, the one in the diff and the one at the hub carrier. You cant see, but like God you just have to have faith and pull em out and replace them. If you really unlucky the lower control arm is tweeked too. But if it where mine I would shim before replacing a control arm and bolts. Oh and the only way a shim could come out it if the studs and nuts to the axle broke since this is where it mounts between the axles and the diff, but if that where to ever happen youve goit much bigger problems

RE: rear alignment
hey brutal, dealer shimmed the *** of my '03. They acted like it was normal procedure on an xk8, in fact, on the rear, it was the only thing they could do if the camber was too far negative...cept put new springs in. Dont think it was that cheap either...more along the lines of $400 to shim both sides.

RE: rear alignment
well i can only tell you that someone see that as a way to make a good paycheck, cause if you get right down to it as I said earlier almost every Jag (XJ-XK) has some amount of camber being off to the negative. But it will NEVER give you irregular inside tire wear until it approaches -2. or more-degrees. Now if I show you this and say "man its in the red out of spec, I can fix that its gonna cost ___" its gonna scare most and if that tech does alot he probobly did the whole job in 30 min or less and knows from memory how to shim out each axle. After all its hanging the suspension on the lift unbolt 4 nuts per side, slip in the shim and bolt it back together, then realign. I would rather recommend something that reall ymatter or needs to be done rather than something like that. And if you really like to throw your can into corners on occasion, more negative camber front and rear will stand the tires straight up giving a flatter, larger contactpatch thus faster cornering speeds. So going back to my previous statement, I just am not concerned cause i do not see any inner tire wear (if toe is correct) from too much negative camber until it approaches -2 degrees(Porsche territory)

RE: rear alignment
once again thanks for all the imput. i've worn through a set of tires in about 11 months. i really wish someone could see this. as a matter of fact i'm going to take a picture for everyone to see. jaguar said i'm worn out the innertreadwall because of this problem. i don't won't to buy new tires until i fixed it.

RE: rear alignment
kats im assuming you have a 98 xj,( Iwish people had their locations and what they drive in sigs!) Is it inside rear tire wear as in cords showing? and does it do it in the front, rear or both. and what your ride height, measure with a tape measure from ground to the wheel lip even with axle centerline
