Smelly oil, am I being overly cautious?
A returning member, here. It has been a while but I used to have an XJ81 and I am now looking at either a newer XJ or a F-Type. My problem is that the 2 XJ's I have looked at, one a 2014 and the other a 2019, both with the 3.0 Supercharged engine had really bad smelling oil.
The first, I thought may have had gas mixing with the oil, as I had similar with the 81, but the second had a similar, very intense 'bad' smell.
I know it's hard to explain smells in text, but neither smelt of oil but of a very sharp chemically gas type smell.
After returning from the second one, I thought maybe I was missing something, but I checked the oil on my 2019 VW and it is fine, almost no smell at all. Is there something with the 3.0 that breaks down the oil in this way or did I just find 2 bad engines?
Thanks
Andy

Best guess from afar.
LACK OF USE.
Some of mine did that when they became the "spare car" and did minimal kms per start up. They were the older engines by what you are looking at, BUT, the X Type has done it once, so 20 minutes running whenever it is started, NO exceptions, or dont start it, simple.
You have done well in my opinion. there are plenty out there, and super low mileage is NOT always a good thing.
ROAD TRIP, some 3000kms,. all sweet. After an oil change of course.
