tensioner replacement question
Hi all,
Going to be doing the ziptie method to replace my second generation tensioners soon. Been reading all I can about it.
Quick, simple question. Several posts have mentioned that before you remove the exhaust cam bolts, align the camshaft "flats" by turning the shaft with the key and fuel off.
What exactly are the "flats" being referred to? Does anyone have photo? I understand you want as little tension on the camshaft as possible from the valve springs, right?
Thanks.

In this photo you can see the flat spot on both cams but they are not lined up to the top. I think the reason for the suggestion is that if you lose control of the cam or the chain you can line them up with a straight edge with little effort.

As Gus pointed out, the flats that they're talking about, are right behind the first Caps, Just aft of the timing chain. What you need to do, is put a 24 mm socket on the crankshaft bolt And turn it Clockwise while watching the camshafts lineup; you will see a point where the two flats are essentially parallel to the ground and you can lay a straight edge across them to see if they are lying correctly. If so the camshafts are timed correctly. Then with your socket on the crankshaft turned the exhaust Cam until you are at the lowest point Possible then you can release the caps.
